Down to 3 to rate - Irene, Madeleine & Rose

Exactly as the title says - we found out we’re expecting a girl! I previously made a post on name ideas and got good advice and we have put it down to 3 now. Our 3 options now are Madeleine, Irene and Rose. DH thinks Madeleine first, Irene second and Rose third.

DH likes Madeleine as lin, I like lin and lehn.

Irene is out as MIL struggled to pronounce it.

I mean, does anyone pronounce ‘Madeleine’ as ‘Madelayne’ and Irene as ‘Ireney’?

ChagSameachDoreen · 04/10/2022 07:12

Irene.

Rose is a boring non-name.

Madeleine = McCann despite what anyone says.

Madeleine
Rose

Irene

this!

Irene isn’t ready for a come back. It really isn’t cute

Madeleine is a fabulous name.

ATwirlADay · 04/10/2022 07:29

If there's any bit of hipster in you, go for Irene - it is pretty cool and would be my choice.

If you're a middle of the road kind of person, choose Madeleine - I like it but I don't like the ubiquitous Maddie.

If you're into investment purchases, Rose is an elegant and classic name (but rather dull). It's never going to offend or upset.

It also depends where you like and the circles you mix in. Eg no one would bat an eyelid at Irene here in London but if you're in the Home Counties horsey set, Rose is the safest option (if you want acceptance from others, which I assume you do, having posted here).

KangarooKenny · 04/10/2022 07:33

Madeline. Not the other two.

lljkk · 04/10/2022 07:38

All fine although I like Rosemary (or Rosalind) better than plain Rose.

LadyWithLapdog · 04/10/2022 08:46

How can your MIL not know how to pronounce Irene?? Does she not go out, watch TV, read? Erin might be more straightforward for her. I like Irene and I like Eirini (yi-ree-nee).

cooolio · 04/10/2022 09:13

"imagine hearing jokes about “come on Irene”!"

Eh? Imagine making a joke and getting the song completely wrong 😑

That said, Irene is someone's Nan (and also very easy to pronounce so I think MIL is very wise throwing you off that one)

Beamur · 04/10/2022 09:18

Rose is a bit dull.
Madeleine is lovely but names with the 'Maddy' nn are quite popular.
Irene is a left field choice but maybe slightly more likely to be unique in school. It annoying as a kid to always be qualified by your surname. I.e Maddy B and Maddy C.

LuciaPopp · 04/10/2022 09:23

I suspect MIL is saying Eye-reen and OP is saying Eye-ree-nee.

LizzieBet14 · 04/10/2022 10:25

Madeleine (and prefer Rosa to Rose)

PrimroseWharf · 04/10/2022 18:25

Madeleine or Rose. Irene is truly dreadful.

TabithaTittlemouse · 04/10/2022 18:29

Rose by far. Agree with pp that Madeleine is nice but Maddy is not. Irene is just awful.

Highfivemum · 04/10/2022 18:37

Not a fan of Madeleine. Just have awful thoughts of the little McCann girl when I hear it.
Rose is very common now. Lots in my DC’s school.
Irene is different. Though be prepared for Renee.

Oneandone · 05/10/2022 17:40

I liked madeleine/maddie for a girl but two separate people said it made them think of madeleine mccan so I was very sadly put off the name. Of the other two options I like Rose.
