Down to 3 to rate - Irene, Madeleine & Rose

Exactly as the title says - we found out we’re expecting a girl! I previously made a post on name ideas and got good advice and we have put it down to 3 now. Our 3 options now are Madeleine, Irene and Rose. DH thinks Madeleine first, Irene second and Rose third.

Irene! That would be cruel. It’s an awful granny name that will never be fashionable again imo. See also Maureen, Doreen or Phyllis.

Maireas · 02/10/2022 18:19

Irene is lovely and not commonly used. I cannot imagine it would be the cause of bullying!
The other two names are also nice.

Arnaquer · 02/10/2022 18:20

I'm not sure that Irene is ready for a comeback yet but I am old

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/10/2022 19:26

Irene
As long as you are pronouncing it properly as Eye-ree-nee - it’s got a great 1930s vibe so it’s ripe to be revived alongside all the Viviennes and Margots. The eye-reen pronunciation however is dire and just says aging barmaid.

Ismene (Is-mee-nee), Ione (eye-oh-nee) and Ianthe are nice alternatives.

Rose
It’s lovely but there are SO MANY. I’d go for Rosanna or Rosemary for a bit of variety of you must, but really I think all Rose names need to be retired for a couple of generations so we can appreciate them again.

Madeline
It’s nice but they are almost always Maddy which is so so. A bit overused.

Not Irene, one it sounds like an old woman, second she’d be bullied at school, imagine hearing jokes about “come on Irene”!

No one of her generation will know that song

Maireas · 02/10/2022 19:29

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/10/2022 19:28

No one of her generation will know that song

Quite. Plus - it's Eileen.

LadyWithLapdog · 02/10/2022 19:33

I like Irene pronounced Greek style ee-ree-nee. I think it’s spelt the equivalent of Eirini.

Both Madeleine and Rose are nice. You can’t go wrong with any of your choices.

S25 · 02/10/2022 19:42

How are you pronouncing the leine in Madeleine? @bubblegumfloss

lane
line
lin?

I also find this a tricky one to know when I see it because of the three different pronunciations but all seemingly spelt with the -leine ending.

S25 · 02/10/2022 19:43

*always not also

Mumofgirls2017 · 02/10/2022 20:54

Rose

Irene is really grannyish and not in a good way.

Madeleine and Rose are equally lovely.

This

Forfukzsake · 02/10/2022 21:06

Good names. When I first read them I thought Irene was dreadful but I came round to it almost instantly and like it now. What about the similar sounding but more pleasant Jean?

HeadNorth · 02/10/2022 21:08

Irene is dreadful, Madeleine & Rose are both lovely - I slightly prefer Rose.

MsTSwift · 02/10/2022 21:10

Irene is dreadful. It was my grandmothers name and she hated it!

nobird · 02/10/2022 21:30

Madeleine and Rose are pretty but safe.

Irene is a great name. Irene Rose. It sounds good and even looks good.

Howdoyoulikeyourtea · 02/10/2022 21:39

Madeleine or Rose.
Or Rosalie or Rosanna if you like the longer Madeleine type names.

Irene sounds horrible to me. I can’t imagine a beautiful baby being called Irene. But that’s my personal taste.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 02/10/2022 21:57

Irene is dowdy.

Rose and Madeleine are both nice.

RuthW · 02/10/2022 22:19

Madeline is awful

Rose is ok with Rosemary on birth cert

Irene is nice

AlwaysLatte · 02/10/2022 22:21

Not keen on Irene, it always reminds me of that very annoying song. Madeleine always reminds me of the little cakes I make sometimes! so for me, Rose.

AlwaysLatte · 02/10/2022 22:22

Or Iris?

LifeIsHardAlways · 02/10/2022 23:23

Maireas · 02/10/2022 19:29

Quite. Plus - it's Eileen.

Fml 🤣you’re right, I blame the sleep deprivation of the last few days with my son ill 🤦🏻‍♀️

Ihavehadenoughalready · 03/10/2022 01:26

Of the three, Irene. Second choice Rose.

However, how about Eileen instead? Similar but maybe not so old-fashioned?

Eileen Rose.

Or, I have an Elena, which I think is such a pretty name.

I agree if you go with Madeleine it's gonna be Maddy. Would it be Mad-uh-line or Mad-uh-lyn?

Ihavehadenoughalready · 03/10/2022 01:28

Good Night Irene

Come on Eileen.....but I do like Eileen even if it's in the song.

Yack02 · 03/10/2022 01:33

Can't believe Irene made it into the top 3! You're not having an 82 yr old.

Of the other two, I'd go with Rose.

SpaghettiSuzetti · 03/10/2022 12:54

I like Irene said eye-reenie.
Prefer Rose.
