Why the hate for David?

Love the name David. Think baby Dave is gorgeous but my husband is totally against it.

We already have a Jonathan and I love that it’s traditional but not particularly popular and I’m looking for something similar. Any ideas?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Saul and Jonathan have a similar biblical link. There is a famous verse :Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.”

I don't think anyone hates David. It's the 60th most popular boys name in England and Wales so it's not like it's underused either. Personally I find it quite dull, but it's so well used and has been so well used for such a long time that it's not at all controversial. Most people won't hate it, but they also probably won't be excited and enthusiastic about it either.

I love the name Peter which is less popular than David, but also classic. Benedict, Duncan, Edmund, Philip, Richard, Victor might also have the vibe you want.

KirstenBlest · 01/10/2022 17:32

I love it.
I know an awful lot of them, but no babies. They are known as Dave, Davey, Dai, Dei, Day, Deio, Defi etc

2pinkginsplease · 01/10/2022 17:40

I just find it a bit boring and bland.

there are so many much nicer names.

CryCeratops · 01/10/2022 17:48

David was the 60th most popular boys name in England and Wales in 2020 so it’s still quite popular. I do like David as a name.

David was, however, a mega popular name when I was younger - I’ve met a ridiculous number of David’s the same sort of age as me or a bit older.
Could your DH be viewing David as a middle aged man sort of name if he’s met loads of middle aged David’s?

FinanceLPlates · 01/10/2022 17:49

Samuel
Daniel
Julian
Julius
(though you might not want two sons with the same initial)

Sandysandwich · 01/10/2022 18:00

I know a few young ones, they are known as Davy and Dai though, I don't think I have met any young kids called Dave, it just makes me think of the tv channel now, dave and dave ja vu

MsReid · 01/10/2022 18:05

I like it, and Davy as a nickname

midsomermurderess · 01/10/2022 18:08

I really like David. Dave, in the other hand, sounds like someone in sales.

DorritLittle · 01/10/2022 18:08

I love the name David. Dave, not so much.

Spanielsarepainless · 01/10/2022 18:13

David is lovely. Why would you call him Dave?

WeneedSamVimesonthecase · 01/10/2022 18:51

I like David, it's DS's middle name.

I think Peter is due a comeback, and is of a similar vibe. And points at own -username Samuel/Sam is great.

donttalkaboutbookclub · 01/10/2022 19:05

David is a lovely, strong sounding name, I love it. Dave not so much!

S25 · 01/10/2022 19:24

It’s a fine name but it just seems a bit bland and like others have said, everyone knows a David/Dave. Perhaps not baby/child age so it’s likely due it’s revival but I just think there a better options out there IMHO.

what about:

Zachary
Isaac
Jacob
Jeremy
Ethan
Dylan

Luredbyapomegranate · 01/10/2022 20:24

There’s nothing wrong with David, but Dave does just say 80s estate agent so I wouldn’t risk that.

Daniel or Dominic?

Michael
Patrick
Nicholas (Nico)
Alistair
Laurence
Matthew
Adam
Benjamin, Benedict
Robert
Simon
Andrew
Alexander
Adrian
Julian
Justin

.. have a similar feel to me

You could probably say the same about Peter, Stephen and Paul - but Pete, Steve and Paul still have the bad 70s/80s vibe Dave has

Veeragall · 01/10/2022 20:25

David is a lovely name. It means beloved. You can't get nicer than that.

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 01/10/2022 20:26

David just makes me think of 'eewwww David' in schitts creek now..... or baby Dave in the Royale Family

WeneedSamVimesonthecase · 01/10/2022 20:27

Simon is another one from that era that I rather like.

BlueDiamondGlow · 01/10/2022 20:30

I like the name but put off there are so many of them. Family members, friends, colleagues, managers, ex crushes. Don't know any children called David though.

Hemelbelle · 01/10/2022 20:40

DH didn't want my first choice for our second son, but after he watched me go through childbirth, straight away he said I could call him the name I wanted, which is what we called him with no further disagreement 😊

Devo1818 · 01/10/2022 20:43

Richard

Rapidtango · 01/10/2022 20:45

David's a great name - strong, easy spelling, brilliant historical references.

Hellocatshome · 01/10/2022 20:47

I love the name David. I think I would always call them David though I'm not that keen on Dave.

mewkins · 01/10/2022 20:52

My ds has it as his middle name after my dad. I've never known a David or dave I didn't like 😁My dad was a superb Dave.

AndTwoFilmsByFrancoisTruffaut · 01/10/2022 21:02

It’s just a bit dull 🤷🏻‍♀️

Love Jonathan though and Jonny is wonderful
