Looking for a boys name beginning with W and at the moment Woody is top of our list.
Do you like the name Woody for a boy?

Because it is a nickname! Might well call the baby Chalky or Nobby or something, well almost.

Not like Tom for Thomas or Lizzie for Elizabeth, which are actually diminutives not nicknames. Short for a recognisable name.

They might say Woody is short for Edward for instance, but I'm not sure about that. Usually Eddie or Ned is short for Edward.

Yeh, my son's nickname as a baby was tubz which is funny now he's a skinny 16 year old. Glad it's not his real name! Although it used to suit him 14 years ago

I worked with a Woody, it suited him and was mostly fine, but people did shorten it to Woods or Wood and he frequently got "Morning Wood!" called to him when he turned up in the morning- mostly by people not trying to make a joke it just happened accidentally.

Zoe Balls son is Woody but to me it sounds like a nick name

I know a horse called Woody. Having said that, I think it's fine as a nickname, but not the child's proper name. Edward, Woodrow - all fine.

Because if a name is your actual formal name, as on your birth certificate, then you can't escape it. If your 'proper' name is something sensible (for want of a better word) then you can choose to use that, or use any nickname, or none, as suits you. Like someone introduces themselves as Zac - you say "as in Zachary or Zachariah?" and they say no just Zac. It's not a proper name, its a derivative. "Hi - my name's Billy" - "Oh my grandfather was William, lovely name!" "No, just Billy".

I love it, but I grew up with a Woody (full name Woodrow) and he was amazing.
Never got bullied for it either. It suited him.

If you like the name so much, change your name to Woody and call your child Jason or Thomas or Oliver or something. Like something a child can grow with and live with and make fit them. A name that serves the child, not one that seems like a joke.
