Beatrice or Beatrix?

I am still working on my list and I am thinking about suggesting one of these two names to my husband this weekend but first sort of need to figure out how I feel about them and which one I prefer. They fit my style but I also think that my husband might get on board because Bee is a somewhat modern sounding nickname and he likes Ruby.

Should I add them to my list, yes or no?

Would you give me your impressions, are there any negative associations? Or some pros and cons for either of these names.

What I thought about so far:

Beatrix - I like the nickname Bee, I think it sounds a bit more modern and carefree but I can't stand Trixie (do you think this is likely?). I know that I can just introduce her as Beatrix or Bee while she's little but at school how likely would it be that friends would go for Trixie or she'd pick it? My guess is not so likely because nicknames are usually derived from the first part of a name. I mean I guess I would get used to it I just don't particularly care for Trix or Trixie.

Beatrice - this seems a bit more elegant to me. Trixie will likely not happen. But it feels a bit older and serious.

Which one is less popular, likely to be dated, more beautiful?

Thanks for your help so far and thanks so much for your input.

Beatrix sound more fun. Beatrice sounds a bit ‘older’.

Margo34 · 22/09/2022 13:18

Beatrice sounds softer than Beatrix.

I love the nn Bea

Think there’s a chance of trixie with Beatrix but no chance with Beatrice which I much prefer . Like you say it sounds very elegant! Have you also thought of Nancy , I love the name Nancy . Think Ruby is quite a common name now .

Lilacsunflowers · 22/09/2022 13:31

I love the nn Bea

Pronounced Bey-ah?! Or Bee-Ah?

Oneearringlost · 22/09/2022 13:38

Beatrice!

dream28 · 22/09/2022 13:41

I prefer Beatrice

Lilacsunflowers · 22/09/2022 13:50

In English Beatrix sounds much better!

In French Béatrice sounds beautiful.

I have a 2 year old Beatrice and we get lots of compliments on her name. Most people call her Bea, pronounced like 'Bee' - just as you would pronounce Tea, Sea and Pea Smile

DurdleSnore · 22/09/2022 16:40

I like both names but I have a slight preference for Beatrix. It’s more edgy than Beatrice. I know a little one and she’s so bubbly and charismatic, her name really suits her. She gets called Bea or Bix and I’ve never heard anyone call her Trixie.

ronswansonstache · 22/09/2022 17:10

I have a Beatrix and no one has ever called her Trixie!

We called her Bea (pronounced Bee) or Beatrix. At nursery they have nicknamed her Bee bee.

You probably have to make a bit of an effort to get a nickname that's not related to the first part of their name to catch on!

Bee is how Bea is said when short for Beatrice/Beatrix

Lilacsunflowers · 22/09/2022 17:53

How do you pronounce Beatrice?

Bee-atrice?

Yeahrepublic · 22/09/2022 17:56

Beatrice is beautiful and on my list.
I really don't like the sound of Beatrix and don't like Trixie as a nickname.

I really like Bea/Bee.

BeeandG · 22/09/2022 18:21

I've got an 8yr old Beatrice. I still love it. Though she is totally Bea. She has decided she doesn't like Beatrice as a name, it will pass I'm sure, but she does like Bea and it very much suits her.

I had an aunt called Beatrice. She was known as Beatty.

VioletTopaz · 22/09/2022 18:26

just re read, mine was known as Betty. So no long lost family moment here, move along please.

ChagSameachDoreen · 22/09/2022 18:45

-trice.

-trix is spiky and ugly, and sounds like budgerigar food.

Vinylloving · 22/09/2022 18:50

Beatrice definitely. The other is so tied to Beatrix Potter and Trixie is very likely

jesusjoan · 22/09/2022 18:54

Beatrice - it's a lovely name. Although do agree the French pronunciation is particularly beautiful.

LarchDragon · 22/09/2022 18:54

Beatrix

All I see is "rice" with Beatrice.

I had a great aunt Beatty, no idea if her name was Beatrice, I just kind of accepted it. Beatrice is such a pretty name - Beatty not so much!

RaininSummer · 22/09/2022 19:37

My aunt Beatty died aver 40 years ago.

SummaLuvin · 22/09/2022 21:06

Beatrice would be my choice.

You could still make Trixie happen, you can never guarantee any chosen diminutives, but they don't always link directly link from exact sounds bit a general feel, and I wouldn't struggle with Beatrice being Trixie. Christopher = Kit. Elizabeth = Lissy. Alexander = Sacha.
