Lumi is Finnish for Snow and is pronounced Loo-mee. Have always had a soft spot for Winter but I know it's not everyone's taste.

What would you choose out of the two?

Lumi in Finland is not pronounced the way you think it is, and Brits will definitely not pronounce it correctly.

How do the Finns say it, out of curiosity?

Same goes for many non-english names @fernz . I don't like Eira said by non-Welsh speakers. It sounds ugly and lazy IMO.

Robyn

@beebopper6 , I think the vowel sounds are shorter, so not Lou-mee.

Forvo is a great resource for hearing things pronounced in different languages. Here is the page for Lumi in Finnish.

I adore winter

Thank you for all your comments. I think I'm leaning more towards Winter with the middle name Victoria after her great grandma :).
Winter Victoria :) x

Lumi is gorgeous. I'd pick Lumi.

Winter is okay. I like the season but the sound of the word doesn't appeal to me as much.

I rather like Winter and no one will have trouble spelling it.
Do you like Noella?

AuntTwacky · 14/09/2022 01:21

Neither

AuntTwacky · 14/09/2022 01:22

Winter is awful

lickenchugget · 14/09/2022 01:29

Winter.

Lumi just reminds me of the nuskin bossbabe lumi spa huns.

Lumi is a gorgeous name. I really don't think the other uses for similar things are well-known enough to make your little girl's name seem weird. As a Finnish speaker, I think Talvi is also gorgeous (meaning winter) but in England, that one would be mispronounced.

A friend actually named her child Pilvi, which means Cloud, but that's probably not one I would go for. I also knew a lady who named her baby the Chinese word for cloud.

I really love Sini (blue) as well or Helmi (pearl) although those two are considered pretty old-fashioned over there.
