Lumi vs Winter for our December baby girl??

Lumi is Finnish for Snow and is pronounced Loo-mee. Have always had a soft spot for Winter but I know it's not everyone's taste.

What would you choose out of the two?

I love Lumi, but when I asked DH if he liked it he said "I like halloumi" Hmm

I also like Winter, but worry it's a bit trendy. For all the hate it gets in here, it's rising sharply along with many other Win- names. Also not keen on Winnie as a nickname.

Cheeselog · 07/09/2022 20:16

I have a Lumi(e) alarm clock. Is it used as a name in Finland? It doesn’t really sound like a name to me.

I don’t like Winter either. Go for something a bit more subtle. What if she is a winter hater!

PP’s suggestions of Natalia(/Natasha) and Noelle are nice.

drumandthebass · 07/09/2022 20:21

Both awful

OrangeSamphire · 07/09/2022 20:34

Lumi = tech device / brand name

Winter. Love it. Winnie for short.

frenchie4002 · 07/09/2022 20:34

I really like Winter

Koifish · 07/09/2022 20:38

I like Lumi, I think it’s really spunky and fun. I never used to like the name Winter until I heard it on a little girl in the zoo and I was spellbound, it was so beautiful and suited her so well.

Either name would be an excellent pick!!

TeenDivided · 07/09/2022 20:39

Lungi? That's unusual.
Yes, its Finnish for snow
Oh are you Finnish then?
No.

Repeat with every person she meets for 50 years.

TeenDivided · 07/09/2022 20:40

Lumi not Lungi (whatever that is)

Petrar · 07/09/2022 20:44

Lumie is a brand of SAD lamps.

What about Noele. Pronounced No-Lee

Huh? No-Lee? You mean No-elle surely?

PrancerandDancer · 07/09/2022 20:50

I pondered Lumin at one point.

Think Lumi is cute and like the meaning behind it.

Winter is pretty but a bit overdone IMO

Skelligsfeathers · 07/09/2022 20:52

Christ alive, they are both AWFUL

RuthW · 07/09/2022 21:17

Winter is nice

KirstenBlest · 08/09/2022 11:17

Both of them are awful. Glumi and bleak midWinter

Changedname81 · 08/09/2022 18:18

I really like Lumen but no one else will 😃

Spanielsarepainless · 08/09/2022 18:22

I speak a little Finnish but I wouldn't use either. Lumi sounds like a mobile 'phone, Winter just silly.

Yutes · 08/09/2022 18:24

I like them.
what about Eira (I think it means snow on Welsh, I’m sure someone cleverer can correct me Wink)

I like Aster or Wren or Robyn

You could consider Jan(uary) or North

Chakraleaf · 08/09/2022 18:27

My friend has a Lumi :)

KirstenBlest · 08/09/2022 18:43

Eira is indeed the Welsh word for snow, and is used as a girl's name.
It's also a norwegian name.

The pronunciation is not the same for them.

KirstenBlest · 08/09/2022 19:02

They don't mean the same either.

HilarityEnsues · 08/09/2022 19:05

What about something meaning Light, like Lucia, Lucy, Nora and so on? Lumi is lovely too.

Cotswoldmama · 08/09/2022 19:21

I love them both! When some people think of winter they think of a cold and miserable scene. I don't, I think of crisp snow crunching underfoot and being the first to walk in it. I think of cosy scarves and hats, of hot chocolate, open fires, rosy red cheeks and Christmas. Lumi is very cute too but maybe a bit too cute for an adult?

Loulou1712 · 08/09/2022 19:47

DD2 middle name is Wynter - she really suits the quirky twist.
I like lumi in theory, but others comments have put me off a bit.
Eira
Neve
Noelle

I prefer Winter. I’ve looked after a few children named this and it’s very wearable in my opinion, compared with Lumi.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 08/09/2022 19:50

I love Winter.
