Final 2 boy names - which would you choose?

We are down to two options I think....

Jago - pronounced Jay-go. I am Cornish. Worried it is an ugly combo of letters and that if you didn't know it was Cornish it might sound like a made-up/ hipster name, or like Jayden/ Kayden etc

Louis - pronounced Loo-ee. An old favourite of mine but a bit worried about popularity, pronunciation confusion and the royal link

Any other suggestions also v welcome! Boy names are HARD!

My husband is half Cornish and we considered Jago for our son but I wasn't happy with how popular it was getting. It's a great name though!

Jory was another Cornish name we considered (Cornish George).

Of the two of your names I'd pick Jago.

Gryfynn ( sp?). One of my sons went to school with one and he was the only one I've ever known and Griff is a cool shortening. Apologies if this is a popular UK name. Otherwise Jago.

KirstenBlest · 09/09/2022 08:17

@marvellousmaple , Griff or Gruff is popular in Wales, short for Gruffydd or Griffith, also shortened to Gruffyn (Griffin). I know quite a few of them. Gruffydd is pronounced Griffith with the 'th' like the 'th' is this, that and other.

Guto is also popular, and is the Welsh for Guy. Gitt-o (o like in got or of not no or go)

Welsh and Cornish are sister languages.

Jago. only ever met one. He's now 18 and lovely. Too many Louis around......

User2145738790 · 09/09/2022 17:42

I can see Jago taking off in popularity with people who like Jayden/Kayden.

fallguys2 · 09/09/2022 18:01

I like Jago but would avoid it if you hate 'Jay'.

It's likely to be shortened to that - you certainly can't guarantee it won't be. Kids often want a nickname/ shortened name when they get to a certain age and Jay is the only thing you can really do with Jago.

Cornishmumofone · 09/09/2022 18:11

Jago is lovely. It's the Cornish version of James. If DD had been DS they would have been called Jago.

bringbackveronicamars · 09/09/2022 19:59

Jago

Louis

I am Cornish too and know of 4 Jago's born this year so far and 3 last year. I think it's getting very popular so be prepared to possibly have class mates with the same name.

@fortunespender
I must congratulate you on your excellent taste! We also considered Louis too but went with Jago in the end. We have Cornish connections. It’s often a last name in Cornwall. Anyway my Jago is now 19 years old and fab and really suits his name- his name is never shortened- not even my his mates and no one has trouble spelling it. We have only meet one other but we live in London. I think it is classic and timeless sounding. I will let you use it! 😉

jrt2022 · 10/09/2022 07:27

If you’re going for classic over trendy then I’d go with Louis because I think Jago will become trendy. It’s short, snappy, has an ending ‘O’ sound like a lot of other trendy names growing rapidly in popularity (Margo, Hugo, Juno, Otto) and also sounds modern with the benefit of not actually being modern. So I think it’s due a bit increase in popularity and often see it suggested or asked about on name boards lately. Louis on the other hand is more classic.

Turtlesone · 10/09/2022 11:53

I like Jago but think it’s likely to become very popular very quickly - much like Arlo which appeared v quickly out of no where. Louis however I think is unlikely to get much more popular than it is currently (slight decline last year, so possibly peaked). I don’t think Louis has got to the point where it feels overused, whereas Jago could potentially go that way if it does suddenly explode. I think both gorgeous though, so maybe just see what he looks like!

thank you all so much for so many helpful comments and opinions. I think we will have to wait and see which feels right when we see him now - our other contender is Rafe (which our daughters love as it means 'wise wolf') but my husband says if I shout it in panic looking for him it will sound like I'm being attacked!

I love Rafe!

bringbackveronicamars · 14/09/2022 20:59

Love Rafe.

ElizaSkye · 14/09/2022 21:54

Another vote for Rafe

marblemad · 15/09/2022 02:38

Louis hands down
