Final 2 boy names - which would you choose?

We are down to two options I think....

Jago - pronounced Jay-go. I am Cornish. Worried it is an ugly combo of letters and that if you didn't know it was Cornish it might sound like a made-up/ hipster name, or like Jayden/ Kayden etc

Louis - pronounced Loo-ee. An old favourite of mine but a bit worried about popularity, pronunciation confusion and the royal link

Any other suggestions also v welcome! Boy names are HARD!

Jago, though it does make me think of “A Child of the Jago,” a Victorian novel about slum-dwellers.

DuchessOfSausage · 08/09/2022 08:45

Welsh Iago is pronounced Yaggo with the o like the o in got, not go.

Kitto is cornish and fits in with the current trends

lilroo87 · 08/09/2022 08:47

Jago, I prefer that over Louis.
I live in Cornwall and I have come across it before and think it's a lovely name, also know a welsh guy called Jago.

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 08/09/2022 09:03

Difficult. They're both great names.
I used to love Louis, but the royal family's recent usage and consequent burgeoning in popularity has put me off a little. Still a good name, though, classic.

Jago is a great name, though I do think it's inevitable that he'd be shortened to Jay, by some people at least.

SatinHeart · 08/09/2022 09:10

I prefer Jago to Louis. But I do think it will get shortened to Jay at some point so you have to decide if that's a deal breaker.

Louis is a bit meh tbh, and you will always get a few who persist in pronouncing it Lewis even after you've told them not to.

TitilatedOcelot · 08/09/2022 09:34

Definitely Jago, especially as you have the Cornish connection.

Louis as a middle name? As well as the potential pronunciation problem (Louis/Lewis), names ending in S always cause confusion when it comes to possessive apostrophes - eg Louis', Charles' etc when it should be Louis's or Charles's!

Ship · 08/09/2022 09:38

I thought at first jago would be pronounced similar to welsh iago (I’m not sure why I thought you wouldn’t pronounce the j) and so based on the fact I definitely would have pronounced it wrong I would say Louis

mondaytosunday · 08/09/2022 10:05

Jago. But I've just had to type it out four times as my phone keeps autocorrecting it! Sounds like a nickname though - bet he'll be asked 'what's that short for' a million times throughout his life! (Two of my kids have names that are usually a nickname and get asked this constantly).

Rockbird · 08/09/2022 10:10

Jago is fab. Louis is dull.

Fozzleyplum · 08/09/2022 10:15

I prefer Jago. However, if I was Cornish, I would call my son Petroc.

bezzok · 08/09/2022 10:24

Jago!!! 100%

Purplemoon19 · 08/09/2022 10:36

Louis isn’t dull it’s gorgeous

alotoftutus · 08/09/2022 10:40

I love Louis - it's my sons middle name.

MassiveSalad22 · 08/09/2022 10:42

Jago isn’t that unusual is it? Like most people know it’s a name even if it’s not used much? But I’d pick Louis if you’re thinking Jago looks ugly!

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 08/09/2022 10:44

I like them both very much. I know a couple of Jagos (We are not in Cornwall though) so it does not feel unsual or made up to me.

SalviaOfficinalis · 08/09/2022 10:44

I like both.
Jago definitely more unusual. I’ve only seen it on baby name threads, never in real life yet, apart from as a surname.

There’s no need to shorten it, so I wouldn’t worry. E.g. you probably wouldn’t be concerned that Louis would be called Lou.

Toomanybooks22 · 08/09/2022 10:45

Louis definitely

PrimroseWharf · 08/09/2022 10:54

I appreciate it’s a traditional name and others will disagree but Jago has a downmarket feeling to me

Louis is a nice name

noclothesinbed · 08/09/2022 10:55

Louis lovely name. Jago on the other hand sounds like a demented cartoon character

AuntTwacky · 08/09/2022 10:56

Jago

Lilacsunflowers · 08/09/2022 16:26

Louis will get pronounced Lou-is a lot. Unless you live in France or Belgium.

MsAnnThropic · 08/09/2022 16:31

Out of the two I'd pick Jago.

Robinni · 08/09/2022 16:45

Louis 100%

Jago makes me think of Django and agree with others he’ll get called Jay.

Oneandabean · 08/09/2022 23:25

Personally I haven’t heard of Jago but would have pronounced it Jargo or Yargo. I don’t think Jaygo is a nice sound. Sounds like a kids tv show

ElizaSkye · 09/09/2022 06:30

Lowen? I think it’s also Cornish with a nice meaning and could be a middle ground between the two.

I like Jago but think it is getting popular fast. Like Louis too
