Help! Really struggling with a name for our boy due in a few weeks. Husband and I can’t agree on anything that we both like.

Front runners

  • Arthur
  • George
  • Oliver
He likes
  • William
  • Edward
  • Matthew
I like
  • Reuben
  • Callum
  • Dylan

Names we like but can’t have for various reasons

  • Liam
  • Rory
  • Joseph
  • Joshua
  • Ethan
  • Benjamin
  • Thomas
  • Oscar
  • Theo
  • Noah

Ideally not beginning with P (or L or R or D) or too many syllables but not a deal breaker.

Has anyone got any ideas of something we are overlooking? Thank you!

There's lots of lovely names on your list. When DS was born we each took the night to whittle down our list to three names. Then we compared, and DS's name was number 2 on both of our lists and we had different first choices, so number 2 it was.

It was never close to the top of the list for either of us, but it just seemed to fit him once he was here and now I can't imagine him being one of the names nearer the top. So maybe for you the right name will be one that at the moment you're a bit ambivalent about.

DS's name is on one of your lists by the way, we have similar tastes!

I really like Liam and Rory on your list although I gather they are not your ideal (wondering why so many letters are a no go!)

I prefer you husbands list to yours although those names are a lot more common. George is my favourite on that list

I don't think your lists are too far apart, you'll be able to work this out.

Try making a list of five names each, for a start.

Mummyme32 · 05/09/2022 07:05

That’s exactly what happened with our daughter’s name actually.

I like Reuben & Dylan the best. I am not keen on Arthur/George as too old fashioned for me and Oliver is too popular. Depends what style
of name you want though - some people like traditional some more modern 😊

KirstenBlest · 05/09/2022 10:27

Arthur - ok but don't like Art
George - fine
Oliver - like but not keen on Ollie

William - ok but will be Will or Billy
Edward - ok but will be Ed, Ned or Ted. I only like Ed of those
Matthew - fine but will be Matt or Maffew

Reuben - don't like it. Gets misspelt
Callum - prefer Calum, which I like
Dylan - dislike with a passion

You list two of my favourites names - Matthew and Reuben. I also really like Calum and Oliver.

Other names you might like -

Why can't you have any of the names on your final list? If you like them use one!

KirstenBlest · 05/09/2022 11:15

Boy’s baby name. He'll only be a baby for a short time, a boy longer, and a man most of his life. Pick a name that you'll still like when he's 50. Pick a name that sounds good with the surname, because most people are known as Firstname Surname, and also consider any short forms of the name when doing this.

Louise0701 · 05/09/2022 11:16

Jack?

I love Arthur George.

noclothesinbed · 05/09/2022 11:17

Jenson ?

Mumofgirls2017 · 05/09/2022 16:17

Go for Arthur!

PearlSupernova · 05/09/2022 16:26

Edward is my favourite from your list. Lots of nn options such as Ned and Ted ( Teddy as a baby) all of which I love.
George is a strong second choice
Then Arthur
seems like you have a preference from strong classic names. How about Ernest, Rupert or Albert? (Bertie is a cute nn too!!)
