Is Lydia a nice name

Dixie29 · 04/09/2022 12:31

Baby girl is already here and still not 100% settled on a name..
We are leaning towards Lydia (middle name Hope) but something is not clicking, we keep doubting it for some reason.
My partner really likes Willow which is a lovely name but I have a few reservations.
Other than that we don't have a lot of other options!

Any opinions on Lydia would be great!

It’s pretty enough, but my mind jumps to Aunt Lydia in Handmaid’s Tale.

I was just coming to say the same.
It's a nice name but the Aunt Lydia thing means I would never use it.

Lydia is a gorgeous name and I really like Lydia Hope.

Congratulations on your baby girl

I like Willow too but prefer Lydia. Also I only know one child Lydia (6 year old) but quite a few Willow's born within the last 3 years

It's a very nice name. What are your concerns?

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 04/09/2022 13:05

I think it’s a beautiful name. I know a little girl called Lydia and she is lovely.

SmokyQuartz · 04/09/2022 13:09

Reminds me of Lydia dustbin.

I think it’s one of those names where you’re naming the adult rather than the baby/child. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

BungleandGeorge · 04/09/2022 13:11

Yes I like it. I think sometimes people feel j sure because of all the pressure around getting the ‘perfect’ name. Once you start using it, I’m sure you’ll feel happier. Or just go back through the baby name books? If you can’t both find something better Lydia it is!

welshpolarbear · 04/09/2022 13:17

I'm not keen I'm afraid. I know a baby called Lydia and she ends up getting called Lyd, or Lyds.

I prefer Willow by far.

NoodleSnow · 04/09/2022 13:18

It’s a lovely name. It does make me think of the Muppets singing ‘Lydia the Tattooed Lady’ though.

WhackingPhoenix · 04/09/2022 13:19

I LOVE the name Lydia but sadly DP doesn’t. Please use it for me!

MrsBungle · 04/09/2022 13:20

Lydia is a lovely name. Lydia Willow is nice.

2orangey · 04/09/2022 13:23

I like Lydia. It does remind me of Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice, but she was pretty cool if you ask me! Also the name of one of the Bennett sisters in Pride and Prejudice.

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/09/2022 13:28

It is

It’s also a great deal nicer than Willow which is wet, will date badly, and will be unfortunate if she isn’t willowy.

It would be good if you could find a name you both really like though. Could you both do a long list and see if there are other matches?

Yes.

allthebikes · 04/09/2022 13:30

Beautiful

TempsPerdu · 04/09/2022 13:30

Lydia isn’t a particular favourite of mine, but it’s a much better, more substantial name than Willow.

The downsides for me are that I dislike the obvious nicknames (the one I know goes by Lyddie or Lyds), and to me there is something slightly fusty or buttoned up about it. Perfectly nice name though.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 04/09/2022 13:31

Lydia is a good strong name (as long as your surname isn't Teapot or similar)

caringcarer · 04/09/2022 13:33

Lydia Hope is lovely.

Squirrelsnut · 04/09/2022 13:34

Love Lydia; controversially she's my favourite Bennett.

Sadly same.

Even thought it's a lovely name

J0y · 04/09/2022 13:36

Love Lydia, Willow is a nice sound was trendy 20 years ago. I dont dislike it but much prefer Lydia.

WildCherryBlossom · 04/09/2022 13:39

Lydia is beautiful, timeless and not overused

byebyelove · 04/09/2022 13:45

I prefer Willow, a girl at my school was called Chlamydia Lydia!

RoseMartha · 04/09/2022 13:45

Love the name Lydia

Pemba · 04/09/2022 13:53

Well every name (probably) rhymes with something else if you try hard enough. Not a reason not to use it, imo.
