How common is Hermione

Hi all,
Someone on a different forum said that Hermione is "extremely common" name for adults in the UK. I'm British and have never met a Hermione or even heard of one IRL.

Stats I've found only go back to the 90s. Obviously it had a peak of popularity in the early 2000s because of Harry potter but it wasn't that popular before was it?

Anecdotally, how many women and girls called Hermione do you know and what age are they please?

Have known 2; One is now 29 and one is 17

One was routinely called 'Mi Mi' and never the full Hermione

Not in the UK - I know two in their 40s, one early 20s, one late teens . Not Harry Potter related I'm pretty sure (and obviously not the older 2). Not common nor as uncommon as in the UK, where I never met any.

You do get pockets of names for various reasons though - we know an unusual number of Magdalenas and Korbinians (all but one of the Magdalenas known by nicknames) neither of which are nationally nearly as popular as our aquaintences suggest!

Nah it's bollocks op. I know and have taught plenty of Jessicas. I've never met a Hermione although I campaigned hard for it to be on our girls' shortlist for the DC (DH wasn't keen and I ended up with 3 boys anyway!).

I've met one Hermione in my life. She'd be about 40 now.

I know a 50 year old of that name (very well) she has never met another one and she likes it that way. It is a rare name in the UK.
Love the name.

There were the actresses Gingold and Baddeley, so never struggled with the name. Same with Penelope - it was the name of the Margo actress in The Good Life.

I've met one, in her late 30s now, and I know of one other, one of my cousin's aunts on the other side of her family, who must be in her 60s.

Definitely not a common name. I like it.

I know of one in her 70s. It's a lovely name.

I once walked past Hermione Norris in the street. That is the sum total of my encounters with a Hermione in real life.

It's never been an 'extremely common' name. It's never even been a 'fairly popular' name.

I really love this name, I think there will probably be Harry Potter comments when meeting new people, but I don’t agree that there would be pronunciation/spelling problems - the popularity of Harry Potter probably helped with this .

Also, I have a different name and I always get comments when I first meet people, ‘is it short for anything’ ‘I’ve never met a _ before’ etc but for me, the good of having a different name definitely outweighs the bad!

Not everyone has read or seen any Harry Potter - I haven't for one.
People can struggle with fairly simple names. A 4-syllable name that isn't pronounced and/or spelt intuitively is almost certainly going to mean that some will struggle with it.

People massively over-estimate the general public's general knowledge. A big chunk of the population will never have come across the name before and a chunk of those who have seen the name written down will never have heard it said aloud.

I know 2 Hermiones, a woman aged around 40 so pre-Potter and a pre school age child.

I don't think Hermione has ever been particularly popular in the UK.

I'm fairly sure most of the children in HP's names were chosen because they weren't very well used at the time - Hermione, Ronald, Neville, Lavender, Ginny etc.

I've never met one or heard of one besides the actress. It's certainly not extremely common. That would be names like Emma and Sarah. Hermione is about as uncommon as you can get, while still being a recognised name. Anabia, Dolcie and Hoorain and were all more popular than Hermione in 2020, and I haven't encountered any of those names either.

We have a 10 year old called it. She mainly gets Mione. We have met (in passing) one other, probably around age 8.
Was uncommon when we chose it and I only knew of Hermione Norris. We are Harry Potter fans but chose it because we loved it, was traditional and not popular at the time, not because of Harry Potter though that is what people assume

The literary critic Hermione Lee was one of my lecturers at university and she was the first Hermione I’d encountered outside of Harry Potter. I’ve since taught one who would be about twenty now. It is fairly uncommon IME.

I think it struggled before because The WInter's Tale wasn't exactly Shakespeare's biggest hit. It's been in literature before JK used it!
