I am pregnant with DS3, I really like the name Wilf, but can't find it in a baby name book anywhere. I struggle with boys names as a 3rd child was always only a dream. Does anyone know of anyone called that and is that the correct spelling??

Absolutely Blu! I knew I'd heard that name somewhere before!!

jeanjeannie · 22/01/2008 16:32

Wilf is big where we are - there were two in the swimming pool the other day. It's on the 'up' in the popularity stakes along with Chester, Monty and Stanley.

sparkybabe · 22/01/2008 17:43

Chester???I can hear some yummy shouting 'Chest-a! Breast stroke! And swing those arms! Froggy legs, Chest-a!'

OrmIrian · 22/01/2008 17:43

I know a Wilf but he's nearing 50. Afaik it's short for Wilfred.

lottiejenkins · 22/01/2008 17:49

Straying from the point slightly,,, Chester is the name of Davina McCalls son. When i named my Wilfred there was a fantastic lady in the village who was a retired schoolteacher, she used to always say "hows young Ivanhoe?" This was because the hero of Ivanoe was called Wilfred of Ivanhoe.... I read with children on a voluntary basis at school and they think its funny that Wilf in the ORT books has the same name as my ds!

HonoriaGlossop · 22/01/2008 17:53

I like Wilf as a shortening for Wilfred but it does have to be said that christening a child Wilf will result in people thinking you are chavvy.

Wilfred - good name. Nice shortenings, Wilf and Fred or Freddie. Go for it

Tigger13 · 22/01/2008 18:03

Thanks for all the lovely positive comments, I am just over half way so if we go for that will probably be Wilfred on birth certificate.

I'm a little surprised by how negative some people's comments are, I wouldn't dream of saying anything to anyone if I didn't like a possible or chosen name.

Wilfred is cool
As is Wilf, Wil or Fred

alfiesbabe · 22/01/2008 20:21

Agree that if you go for it, then register him as Wilfred as his 'proper' name. Just seems a bit odd to give your child an abbreviation of a name.

Tigger13 · 22/01/2008 20:31

Sorry themildmanneredjanitor but I wasn't actually asking for opinions on the choice of name, but checking the spelling.

Tigger13, if you ask on MN you're going to get opinions.

If you just want to check the spelling, I've found Google is quite useful.

Our next door neighbour has two DS - one Gilbert and one Wilfred. They get called Gilly and Wifie or Will. I like Wilfred, but then I like old man's names!!

blanki · 25/01/2008 23:14

Wilfie is just gorgous! Met a wee boy on hols last year called this. He was totally adorable. Named Wilfred, known as Wilfie. Really cute. Lots of people HATED ds's name, but I loved it and he suits it!

Good luck!

Tommy · 25/01/2008 23:17

I have an Uncle Wilf

also had a younger friend called Wilfred but he called himself Wil

fingerwoman · 25/01/2008 23:18

I think Wilf is great.

I really don't understand the wohle "register something else in case he doesn't like it"
anyone might end up hating their name, should we all give our kids a zillion names just in case they don't like the choen one? I hated my name as a child (claire) but I didn't get the chance to change it.
v. bizarre if you ask me

I think it is well cute!!
It's probably in the name book as a diminutive or abbreviation of Wilfred, if you want the meaning? then again, you might need to go hunting the baby sites on t'internet cos these baby name books have to leave something out or you'd never lift them - in your condition and all that
