Love the name Isabel. Think its classy even if it is so popular.

Probably going to stir a few pots here what do people think of the nickname Issie, pronounced Iss-ee (iss rhyming with hiss or kiss).

I have a isabella and I call her Izzy

Snugglemonkey · 30/08/2022 21:30

I think it will be Izzy no matter what you do.

Snowiscold · 30/08/2022 21:33

It’ll end up as Izzy.

OiFrogg · 30/08/2022 21:36

People often (oddly, I think) misspell Izzy as Issy/Issie so to most people it's the same name.

Violettaa · 30/08/2022 21:39

I know an Issy and an Issi, both pronounced Izzy.

ive never come across anyone pronouncing it as you’re suggesting, but it is quite nice. Though they’re such similar sounds I doubt anyone will notice the difference (sorry!)

Bells3032 · 30/08/2022 21:41

My daughter is Isabelle and always called izzy or issy

DuggeeHugPlease · 30/08/2022 21:45

Yes I think Izzy and Issy are used interchangeably and pronounced the same.

Luredbyapomegranate · 31/08/2022 00:01

I knew an Issy short for Felicity.

You can’t really control it not ending up as Izzy though.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 31/08/2022 09:28

Issy and Isy will end up being pronounced Izzy, I’m afraid.

The Isobel I know is an Ibby if that helps 😃

MsTSwift · 15/09/2022 21:43

There are sooooo many. Are you sure? There are lots of other nice names that aren’t so overused. Eve and Izzy are the Sarah and Claire of this generation.

I have an Isabel. The only one in her year at school ( about 50 kids) , infact I've not heard of another in the entire school ( 350 kids) . Never met another at baby group or classes anywhere. Met multiple Ezra's, Esme's, Bodhi's, willows and Indies and other so called " unusual" names though.

I'd rather be boring than pretentious!

BobinogBobbleHat · 15/09/2022 22:02

The comedian Issy Suttie pronounces her name as you'd like. I like it, but you will probably have to be prepared to keep correcting people until she's old enough to do it herself!

MsTSwift · 15/09/2022 22:52

Why is a non overused name necessarily pretentious? There are lots of underused “normal” names off top of my head Miranda Zoe Susannah. I have two teen girls honestly there are so many Izzy’s they all need their surname. It’s a nice enough name but the over use has drained it of any charm

Anon778833 · 15/09/2022 22:53

I have an Isabella. All her friends call her Issy.

MsTSwift · 15/09/2022 22:54

Each of my teens have at least 2 in both their wider friendship groups. Most girls are called either Izzy or Evie. It’s bonkers!

It’s mainly about what name suits the child. My Isabella was going to be Clio or Alexandra but when she was born, neither name suited her.

Shinyandnew1 · 15/09/2022 22:58

We seem to know loads of girls named Isobel/Isabel/Isabelle/Isobelle (now mid-late teens). Nearly all are shortened to Issy, but pronounced Izzy. I’ve never known one to rhyme the shortening with Hissy.

Lilacsunflowers · 15/09/2022 23:02

I'd rather be boring than pretentious!

What does that even mean?

Lots of posters are simply stating that Isabel and Isabella have become boring from being overused. Why is the alternative of an overused name 'pretentious'?!

Lilacsunflowers · 15/09/2022 23:03

but when she was born, neither name suited her.

Don't all babies look pretty much the same Confused

caitlinrose · 15/09/2022 23:03

Isabel is pretty.

Issy doesn't make sense to me because the S sound is not really included in Isabel.

Izzy makes sense but I personally dislike it and it somehow reminds me of the early 2000s. It seems a bit our of style since most people have switched to Belle or Bella as nicknames for Isabel and Isabella.

My personal choice would be either Isabella or Isabelle nickname Belle which I recently added to my list.

In general I prefer the Isabelle spelling.

Scoobyblue · 15/09/2022 23:06

There are so many Izzys that she will become Izzy like the others and probably Izzy K if anything like my dc’s school. Dd is 21 - there were 5 out of 75 girls in her year. Ds is 17 - there are 7 in his year.
