Following on from my previous thread, I really like the name Alba for a girl - interested in opinions? Thanks.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

No, sorry, I used to have an Alba stereo... it's not a name for a human being.

MajorCarolDanvers · 21/08/2022 20:51

Are you a Scottish Nationalist?

It is though. It's a fairly run of the mill Spanish name.

housemaus · 21/08/2022 20:53

My half Spanish goddaughter is called Alba, I love it.

Cheeselog · 21/08/2022 20:55

I also think of Scottish nationalism. Alba gu bràth etc.

thisismadness77 · 21/08/2022 20:55

I have a 3 year old Alba. She is the light of my life. I read it in the Timetravellers Wife and loved it.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 21/08/2022 20:58

Are you pronouncing it Al-ba as its written or Al-a-pa as its pronounced in gaelic?

I prefer the sound of Al-a-pa but the poor kid will spend their life explaining how to pronounce it.

DH tried to call one of our kids Alpin after a pictish king but it made me think of Museli so I nixed it.

Fleur405 · 21/08/2022 20:58

I think it’s lovely.

I’m in Scotland - the political party is not remotely mainstream and the Gaelic word is pronounced differently (most people - myself included- don’t know how to pronounce it in Gaelic) so I really wouldn’t worry about that.

SizzlerFizzler · 21/08/2022 20:59

cheap electronics brand

Thank you - you see this is my view. The Gaelic pronunciation is different, so not really bothered by it.

Cheap electronics brand - yep, but I'm pretty sure they're not around anymore, so can't see it being an issue with classmates.

It's really quite an ugly name.

mogwa · 21/08/2022 22:05

I like it. It means "dawn" in Spanish (and maybe Italian too?). Perhaps it's an age thing, but I had entirely forgotten about the electronics brand and I doubt kids will make the connection. I know it means Scotland in Scottish Gaelic, but I can't see that being mentioned much unless you live in Scotland.

Lightningrain · 21/08/2022 22:14

I don’t have strong feelings either way although I’ve got to agree with PP’s that it immediately conjured up an image of the stereo I had as a child. I’d guess many people age early 30’s + would make that association so consider whether that would bother you.

BlackbirdsSinging · 21/08/2022 22:16

I like it. I know a little blonde haired Alba which is cute as Alba means white.

Cheerybigbottom · 21/08/2022 22:20

Alba Gu Brath! Scotland Forever

Only said by really annoying nationalist Scots (my family).

Also cheap af electronics brand, think my teenage alba stereo was from Argos?

Alma- I absolutely love

SmokyQuartz · 21/08/2022 22:21

I think it’s a nice name.
I also think that it will blend in with all the ‘Albies’ that seem to have popped up over the past few years - I have 2 in infant school and there’s 6 speared out between their classes, plus an extra one at swimming!

This book reference is what I came to say!

I love the name. It was on my list for DC1 having loved it in the book and is back on the list for DC2 😍

WildCherryBlossom · 22/08/2022 03:56

I love Alba!

sashh · 22/08/2022 04:16

It's the name of a character in 'the time traveler's wife', the daughter.

The TV series only covered the first half of the book so this may become popular.

mathanxiety · 22/08/2022 04:47

A beautiful, timeless name. It's easy to pronounce and travels well.

Alma is lovely too. I believe it means soul in Spanish.

sjxoxo · 22/08/2022 04:52

Fun fact: Gary Linekers’ niece has called her son Alba. Lots on here saying they know girls with the name but there’s a boy too! X
