Less than 4 weeks until my due date and we still haven't been able to figure out a middle name for our baby girl!

My grandmas name was Doreen and I'd love to have something similar. I've considered "Dora" but the baby's first name ends in "a" and I think it sounds too similar.

Does anyone have any ideas please?Smile

Did your grandma have a middle name?

Or maybe Dorothy/Dorothea?

You know what, just use Doreen. You'll be ahead of the curve - names always come back - and no one uses middle names anyway. What a lovely reason!

SpikewasfitterthanAngel · 18/08/2022 20:50

My friend wanted to name her daughter after her grandma Doreen and called her Dolly (her actual nickname!)

OwlBasket · 18/08/2022 20:52

I like Doreen! Dorrie?

OwlBasket · 18/08/2022 20:57

Or Rene is another classic shortening. Prefer Dorrie though myself, probably because of the Patrica Coombs books TBH

I'd just use Doreen. Or if you really hate the name then don't use it. But the idea that you hate someone's name, but find the closest sounding name that you can stand and then say it's named after them doesn't make sense to me.

ChicCroissant · 18/08/2022 21:08

Doretta? Also ends in A though.

ofwarren · 18/08/2022 21:10

I'd just use it. Nobody uses their middle name.

RebeccaNoodles · 18/08/2022 21:10

Theodora? Or use Doreen and call her Dorie or Dory for short!

Strangerthings4NW · 18/08/2022 21:11

I know a lady called Dreena, I always thought it was lovely.

Floralnomad · 18/08/2022 21:11

If you are using it to honour your grandma then use Doreen , any other name won’t do the same job . It’s a middle name and frankly lots of kids have less than desirable middle names because of honouring relatives .

noclothesinbed · 18/08/2022 21:17

There's no point if you are changing it though ?

AmandaMirandaPanda · 18/08/2022 21:24

I'd use Doreen. If you're not sure about it or don't think it flows with the first name you've picked, maybe consider multiple middles - e.g., Anna Elizabeth Doreen Lastname. If your grandma used a nickname - for example Dory or Reenie - that could work as a middle too.

I used to work with a Dorinda and I think it's really nice, especially as a middle, but it wasn't your grandma's name.

vroom321 · 18/08/2022 21:24

Dot, Dotty, Dottie

LittleBearPad · 18/08/2022 21:25

Dory is pretty

ignoring the fish element

3peassuit · 18/08/2022 21:26

Dolly. Renee, Doris.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/08/2022 21:35

How about Dee.
Eg Amelia Dee Surname

ChestyLaRue21 · 18/08/2022 21:37

Doireann is Doreen in Irish and is pronounced Dir-in

i think it’s lovely 😊

Plump82 · 18/08/2022 21:39

Reena? I had an Aunty Reena and I always loved her name.

RedLemonade · 18/08/2022 21:42

Darina or Dairín (Dah-reen) for other similar sounding Irish variants.

ITriedToStopSwearingButICunt · 18/08/2022 22:17

Dorian?

I'd just use Doreen if I were you.

BadGranny · 18/08/2022 22:18

Maureen?

Eixample · 18/08/2022 22:21

Would her maiden name work as a slightly American style middle name?

NannyR · 18/08/2022 22:25

I'd just use Doreen, I agree with other posters that it's not really honouring your grandma if you choose another name a bit similar because you don't like her actual name.

ThistleDoo · 18/08/2022 22:27

Dodie, as in Dodie Smith, author of 101 Dalmatians/I Capture the Castle?
