Max - but one of the middle names has to be Clifford...

Due first baby soon, if it's a boy I'd really like to use Max. But, I forgot that one of DP's family names is Clifford. I'd use another middle name in between Max and Clifford, but even so - is it too soon? To add insult to injury, I really don't like Clifford - but the deal has always been that I can choose the first name if DP gets to give the baby Clifford as a middle name and his (very generic, Smith/Jones type) surname.

Hmm I don't normally think people even notice middle names - but Max Clifford is so notorious I'd be wary.

What about Rex, Sean or Leo if you like short punchy names

LightandMomentary · 18/08/2022 13:57

Just have 2 middle names and Clifford can be the second one.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/08/2022 13:58

It’s fine as the second middle name.

Arucanafeather · 18/08/2022 13:59

Totally fine to have as a second middle name.

SuePerdupa · 18/08/2022 14:00

People will forget soon enough.

I didn't call my daughter Bonnie because of the connection to Bonnie Langford and Just William the TV program....no one would know it today though

Bonnie wasn’t up for sex offences though was she?

I assume you are joking OP

TheStarsDontShine · 18/08/2022 14:18

Maybe add in Rolf To be on the safe side. of course you can't use it.

toastofthetown · 18/08/2022 14:21

I wouldn’t. Max Clifford is so notorious that even if the name were Max Edward Clifford Jones, Max Clifford still pops out.

Obviously I can’t tell the future, and don’t know how long the association will last (though I’m late twenties/ early thirties and it’s very strong for me) or how often he’d be using his middle names or it if will bother him. Still would be a very strong no from me

GoAround · 18/08/2022 14:23

I don’t think you can use those names together in any capacity. If it were just someone famous then fine but absolutely not ok when it’s sex offences.

Whiskeypowers · 18/08/2022 14:29

Why anyone would knowingly use those names together in such close combination is beyond me
are you joking?

MiniDinosaur · 18/08/2022 14:30

No, no, no!

Bluelightfairy · 18/08/2022 14:33

Don't call your child Max, I have a Max and every other child or dog is called Max.
We play Max bingo when we're on holiday.

ButterRose · 18/08/2022 15:28

I wouldn't if it was my son
Other options similar to Max
Rex
Lex
Gus
Leo
Jackson NN Jax

Or try talking your DP around to using another name or some shortened or just similar version of Clifford eg Cliff or even Ford or a family NN instead of the actual name

Rapidtango · 18/08/2022 15:30

This is your child you're talking about - why would you do that to them?

AppleBottomRats · 18/08/2022 15:33

I’d never heard of Max Clifford until this thread made me Google him and initially thought it was something to do with Clifford being the maximum sized dog Blush

BloodAndFire · 18/08/2022 15:39

So the child gets two surnames from your partner, but none from you?

I think naming him after a convicted paedo who liked to be taunted about his tiny penis is the least of your worries.

AppleBottomRats · 18/08/2022 16:06

@BloodAndFire I think it’s a family name as in a middle name that’s passed down rather than a surname. My ex had a family tradition that the first son’s middle name was always Edwin for example.

mrswhippy99 · 18/08/2022 16:44

Thanks all. As always, a range of different opinions, expressed in a myriad of ways... 😂 I really don't think anyone much cares about middle names, and I've never known people use them regularly, but of course I can't guarantee that everyone is the same as me, so I'll give it some more thought.

I agree with the PP that even with a buffer middle name you just can't unsee or unhear the Max Clifford part! I do hope this was a joke because how silly a coincidence to be forced to have Clifford as a middle name when you like Max as the first! He's too well known / notorious for it to be ok for me, partly because I would myself be constantly remembering Max Clifford when I looked at my baby's name and I would also be embarrassed to tell other people. Either Max or Clifford has to go!

DaisyJoy1 · 19/08/2022 11:08

I wouldn't. I'd never consent to Clifford though personally, and would keep Max instead.

pinklavenders · 19/08/2022 11:41

No way would I use Max and Clifford in the same name!

pinklavenders · 19/08/2022 11:42

I think it's a wind up too.

LovinglifeAF · 19/08/2022 11:45

Good god no

mrswhippy99 · 19/08/2022 11:47

It's not a wind up - DP really wants Clifford as a middle name because most men in his family have had it since the dawn of time, apparently. I think it's genuinely awful for a variety of reasons - and given I've agreed the baby will get DPs surname I think we'll probably end up tossing a coin to decide whether the baby gets Max OR Clifford if I still really like it after the baby is born (and it's a boy).

I really like Max as a first name. Max is not an unusual name, I'm surprised so many of you are finding it difficult to believe.
