Saw this name recently and thought it sounded lovely for a girl. Not seen it before. I don't have any babies to name but someone might like it.

I've never heard of the flower only the drink, I like a peach mimosa myself!

mogwa · 15/08/2022 12:53

I don't dislike Mimosa but I would probably expect it to be the name of somebody from another culture i.e. not white British. I've heard of Mimoza as an Albanian woman's name, which probably influences my perception of the name.

I'm vaguely aware there is a drink called mimosa, but I've never had it or seen it on a menu.

gogohmm · 15/08/2022 12:54

Best twin names I met were called Chardonnay and Merlot ... they had appropriate hair colours too. Their mum thought they were classy names, the rest of the mums in the playground didn't agree

DuchessOfSausage · 15/08/2022 12:56

It makes me think of the recipe with grated egg over salad

That apparently says EVERYTHING there is to know about you. Repent for your uncultured ways and become a botanist.

CPL593H · 15/08/2022 13:03

Forget the origins for a minute, think about the abbreviations, because it lends itself to them

Mimsy
Mims
Mim
Mimi

She really will be one or possibly several of these for her whole life. Although Mimosa is far from an ugly name, I would have loathed any of the variants above passionately.

In 11 years she may come home in tears after having classmates chanting “Buck’s Fizz, Buck’s Fizz, Buck’s Fizz,“ at her.
Kids can be brutal.

Ah yes, those 11 year olds with their in-depth knowledge of alcoholic drinks, bless them 🙄

I'm 53 and was unaware that this was a drink; just thought of it as a flower. Also seen it used to name other things: restaurants, shops, boats etc. too.

For a girl... personally I'm not keen.

Op I think you’re a little confused,

a margarita cocktail was likely actually named after a woman called margerita back in the 1940s, it was a common woman’s name well before it was a cocktail,. The same with the pizza, it was also named after a woman called margarita, that’s why no one thinks of them when they hear the name, the woman’s name came first and was very popular.

a Mimosa on the other hand is not a woman’s name and is a very very well known cocktail Name,

it would be like calling your kid Chardonnay and pretending it was just a pretty name and after the grape, when everyone would associate it with the wine.

im surprised youve never heard of a mimosa, as said it’s incredibly common.

AppleBottomRats · 15/08/2022 13:09

It definitely doesn’t sound like a people name, and I would absolutely assume she was named after the cocktail (even though I also know of the plant). I knew a Tom Collins at school and he was teased for it!

I've never heard of mimosa as a drink, when did it stop being called buck's fizz?
They're slightly different drinks. A mimosa has more champagne than a Bucks Fizz

Actually it’s the opposite, a mimosa is two parts orange juice to one part champagne (or fizzy wine) and a Buck’s Fizz is two parts champagne (or fizzy wine) to one part orange juice. The mimosa has a lower alcohol content than a Buck’s Fizz, but they are effectively the same drink.

Pretty sure it's the other way around......that's certainly how it was explained to me when I asked this question when Mimosa was on the menu at a bottomless brunch.

brookstar · 15/08/2022 13:16

Actually, I stand corrected, Google informs me that a bucks fizz is 2 parts champagne and one part orange while a mimosa is equal parts champagne and orange juice.
Apologies!

11 year olds definitely Google each other’s names when mucking around in ICT lessons and the cocktail is the first result for mimosa.

I only ever heard of the beautiful flower and my grandad recalling the mimosa blossoms from his childhood home. I thought it was well-known as a flower.
I've never heard the word used for an alcoholic drink. That's like Margarita - it doesn't stop the name being used.
One of those names where the response to it tells you a lot about the respondent.

But if you believe that the response only tells you about the respondent, why did you ask for opinions?

Most people would be glad they’d found out and had a lucky escape before they named a baby with a name most people will associate with a cocktail.

What about Marisa? Lovely name, similar sound.

brookstar · 15/08/2022 13:17

Although, a bar near me adds a shot of Cointreau to their mimosa's making them extra dangerous!

xJoyfulCalmWisdomx · 15/08/2022 13:18

Is this not spanish for fussy and precious?

It's a bit of a mouthful to say.

You're right about Margarita because it's a relatively common name (or at least recognized as such) in parts of southern Europe and Latin America. I have two of them whom we nicknamed, "Margie" in my family.

But "Mimosa" is indeed a female name in Latin America. I have one in my family and we call her "Mimi". It is in reference to a flower of a specific tree/shrub. It's no different than calling a child, "Rose", "Lily" or "Fern".

Is it also a name of a popular drink? Yes, but they get the name from someone, as in Margherita pizza. Hell, "Nacho" is a nickname for "Ignacio". I'm pretty sure the many men in the world called "Ignacio/Nacho" were not named after the chips and cheese dish.

rightonthyme · 15/08/2022 13:26

I think of the plant that curls up if you touch it, that's what mimosa is to me. I think it sounds pretty as a name - maybe a middle name? Not many ways to shorten it (unless you go for "Mim" which makes me think of the witch haha).

suzyscat · 15/08/2022 13:37

Mimosa to me is an American Buck's Fizz and a lovely flower.

I wouldn't name a child after a drink personally.

Yes I was surprised by the ops comment here.

I thought most folks were aware this was both a cocktail and a flower. The mimosa flower is also known as the “shameplant “or the “touch me not” It’s common culture and should be in most peoples general knowledge bank.

im not sure what the op meant by it tells you something about the respondent.

Also mimosa in spanish means someone that likes being cuddled. It's cute and affectionate.

Thanks @Templanza

I know times have changed but as a teen in Spain I thought it was a bit of an insult. Like the great aunts implying a child was a bit needy.

But I see dictionary says cuddly!

My mistake.

SeanChailleach · 16/08/2022 14:54

The mimosa is a symbol of International Women's Day as described below:

medium.com/technical-excellence/the-meaning-and-story-of-the-mimosa-flower-17920684295f

I didn't know this when I started the thread.
Thank you those who posted useful information about the name, its Spanish meaning, that it is used in Nordic countries.

For those of you who commented that the names used for a mixture of orange juice and champagne, thanks. As I don't mix (ha ha) with anyone rich enough to drink expensive wine, I guess I wouldn't know that.
I don't think it matters: it's very well known as a flower and it has a toughness about it, being a tree, that makes it a great feminist choice as described in the article I have linked.

I always thought Mimosa was a fancy way of saying Bucks Fizz so you could use that instead Grin

Honestly it's a pretty name but I personally wouldn't.
