thoughts about this name for a south asian baby girl? I think it’s a lovely, warm sounding name, what comes to your mind?
pronounced Am-baa-lee (like Bali but with “am” at the beginning)

Beautiful.

UnityO · 07/08/2022 17:26

Gorgeous name!

LightDrizzle · 07/08/2022 17:28

Lovely, and it’s pronounced how I’d have guessed even though it’s new to me.

ApolloandDaphne · 07/08/2022 17:32

It's a lovely name.

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 07/08/2022 17:32

It's lovely 😊

Luredbyapomegranate · 07/08/2022 19:47

lovely

You might get people saying it Am-BAA-lee just from the spelling, but it shouldn’t be a huge deal to correct.

Luredbyapomegranate · 07/08/2022 19:49

Sorry I misunderstood - Am-BAA-lee is how it’s said. I thought you were describing Am-ber-lee. In which case I think it’s OK but not lovely.

Yes, can’t be having any of those funny furrin names, we need to all start giving our kids good white English names.

😕

JasmineVioletRose · 12/08/2022 23:17

It's really lovely op.

Does make me think of Ambala Indian snacks shops. But hey they make delicious food

WTF?!

Horcruxe · 12/08/2022 23:19

No sounds weird, I dont think I've ever heard that name used before.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 12/08/2022 23:21

I thought Ambali was a kind of porridge?

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 12/08/2022 23:23

It's a lovely name, though, and easy for an English-speaker to pronounce (assuming from the fact you're posting on MN that you live in the UK). As long as you don't regularly come across Kannada speakers you should be okay…

Sounds weird?
It's a Hindu name so you comment sounds a bit "off"..

ofwarren · 12/08/2022 23:26

I think it sounds good!
It's pronounced as I expected it to be which is helpful.

Velvetbee · 12/08/2022 23:35

Beautiful.

AliBaliBears · 13/08/2022 17:49

Lovely name!

I'm South Asian but never heard it used.

Not a common one

cordelia16 · 16/08/2022 15:07

Ambali is a vegetarian drink or porridge in South India. Ambala is a chain of Indian foods in the UK.

And it's pronounced Um-BAAL-ee, not Am-BAA-lee.

Have you considered Anjali, which is an actual girl's name? Pronounced Un-JA-lee.

PeekAtYou · 16/08/2022 15:08

It sounds pretty and is easy for people in the Uk to pronounce too.

I thought of those shops too!!

DaisyJoy1 · 18/08/2022 12:05

My (born, raised and lived in India until very recently) Indian husband says that ambali is an Indian food, not a name. It's a type of porridge. Very good, apparently. You can easily find it on Google if you don't believe me. Are you Indian or did you find this online? It's also pronounced 'Amber-lee'

DaisyJoy1 · 18/08/2022 12:06

If you found it online, just a warning - online naming sites are notoriously unreliable. When I was considering Indian names for our children, I found LOADS of gorgeous ones that all of my Indian family claimed they'd never heard of in their entire lives/swore weren't actual names.

That's what I thought! But good to hear from someone actually Indian.
