Edmund, Lorenzo (Enzo) or Hugo

I have 3 very different names in my top 3 and would love your honest thoughts and opinions!

Edmund feels like a fairly safe option, nice and classic

Lorenzo is a bit more ‘out there’ for us but I love how it sounds with our surname and would be nice for the baby to be the only ‘Enzo’ in his class

I’ve always loved Hugo but worry it’s a bit popular and pretentious

I like Edmund

Enzo just makes me think of slimy older blokes

Hugo is popular, Hugh a bit less so. I don’t see how either is pretentious

Jethro?

AlwaysAugust · 06/08/2022 22:10

Edmund might be more old-fashioned than classic?

Hugo is rather overused

Love the name Lorenzo

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 06/08/2022 22:13

This is what I think of when I hear Edmund

Edmund, Lorenzo (Enzo) or Hugo
pinklavenders · 06/08/2022 22:13

Love Lorenzo.

Edmund us ok but he may end up as Ed...

I don't like Hugo - it's too hooray Hugo and a bit pretentious imo

Bluepolkadots42 · 06/08/2022 22:18

Not Edmund because he is the egotistical loser that becomes the spy for the Queen in Narnia.... Wink only semi joking there too.

Love Enzo and knew a very lovely one many moons ago. Hugo ok but very common round where I live. Prefer Hugh instead.

Derrymum123 · 06/08/2022 22:23

Enzo is lovely. Not many of them either.
Not keen on Edmund or Hugo though.

DotDotDotDotDot · 07/08/2022 10:01

Lorenzo/Enzo is great - love Italian names though.
Hugo is nice with a good meaning but it is very popular in my area, I’ve met a lot of Hugos in the past 3 years since I had my DD.
Edmund is just not my taste but he’d be likely to be the only Edmund in his class if that’s what you want.

Joolsin · 07/08/2022 10:09

Love Enzo - my only query is does it sound ok with the surname.

Edmund - no, Blackadder.
Hugo - awful name, as is Hugh. They sound like the noise of somebody vomiting.

Billylilly · 07/08/2022 10:10

I love Lorenzo/Enzo! By far the best out of those 3

ChagSameachDoreen · 07/08/2022 10:37

Lorenzo is the Ballonz of your choices.

Enzo sounds too much like Gonzo, and will sound silly on a (presumably) little English boy.

pimlicoanna · 07/08/2022 10:39

Lorenzo

pinklavenders · 07/08/2022 15:05

Lorenzo is cool!

TheBikiniExpert · 07/08/2022 15:10

Just curious, why not Lawrence?

toastofthetown · 07/08/2022 15:34

I love Edmund, but with all Edwards and Teddys about there, it might blend in a bit. Mondo could work as a diminutive as a bit of stretch if you wanted something a bit more unusual, but he might end up preferring Ed.

I don't think Hugo is pretentious. It's way too popular to me to have that kind of connotation. But it's also way too popular for me find interesting at all.

I'm not a fan of Lorenzo; I prefer Enzo as a standalone. Enzo is rising in popularity, so depending on how trendy your area is, you might be more likely to have multiple Enzos in a class than multiple Georges. Adding together the numbers of Enzos and Lorenzos born in 2020 puts the name just outside the top hundred with both still rising. Enzo is also super trendy as a two syllable name ending in O. In the top hundred alone there was Leo, Theo, Arlo, Hugo and Milo, so while he may be the only Enzo, his name won't sound distinct in a group - if that bothers you.

Crochetandcoke · 07/08/2022 15:42

I love boys names ending in an O and Love both Lorenzo and Enzo as a stand-alone as well (more than Lorenzo, but so love both)

However, I feel like Hugo has a class connotation whereas Lorenzo/Enzo is class less. Personally I wouldn't name my kids a name that is seen as a class signifier, whether I belong to the class it's seen to signify or not. I feel like little Hugo might be going to public school and on to Oxbridge or Eton? There are just some names that are really associated with the UM and U class, and I would feel odd naming my kids them. It would be too much like naming them Alexander Boris Dewaffle johnson Or whatever is name is

babyjellyfish · 08/08/2022 09:32

These threads always amuse me because you get some people saying Hugo is a hooray henry name associated with a certain social class, and other people saying it's too popular and overused. Both those things can't be true.

I have a Hugo so I am biased.

I also really like Edmund, lovely name.

Not so keen on Enzo, but where I live it is seen as a slightly chavvy name, for want of a better word.

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 08/08/2022 10:13

There's a little Hugo in my DS old school who is more likely to be headed to borstal than Eton. Certainly not from a public school type family. I think any class connotation has passed with popularity now. It's just a name.

Edmund totally redeems himself and is a great character in the later books! I love him!

Op, I like Edmund and Lorenzo, although I don't like Enzo. Hugo is too popular for me, I know several, and I don't like it's sound. To me it sounds like a conflation of Huge Ego 😬

lljkk · 08/08/2022 12:13

I find them quite similar. It's not like OP suggested Jayden, Samuel & Rijel (those would be 3 very different names).

I probably like Hugo best in OP's list.

AdelaideRo · 08/08/2022 12:16

Hate Lorenzo. Unless you have Italian heritage I would discount it.

Edmund is more classic. Hugo veers towards the posh (in my current social circle in London it would be unremarkable. In my native Edinburgh it would stand out).

Musmerian · 08/08/2022 12:17

I have an Edmund and he’s 22 now and likes his name. It’s not common - I’ve taught a couple in the last 20 odd years but everyone has heard of it. Lots of nn options, Ed, Ned etc. Literary connections tend towards the villainous- King Lear and Narnia ! I like Hugo but not keen on Lorenzo - love Laurie though.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 08/08/2022 12:20

I know one Edmund - who's now early 40s and has almost always gone by Eddie!

I'm not keen on Lorenzo/Enzo unless you're Italian or have that heritage.

Hugo sounds upper class and is probably a name I'd give to a Dachshund if I were going to get one.

MrsMontyD · 08/08/2022 12:24

It depends what you live Hugo to me is very pretentious, it's definitely not a popular name.

AWobABobBob · 08/08/2022 12:40

Hugo.

Lorenzo will no go with your surname unless it is Italian or Spanish. Is that your heritage?

pinklavenders · 08/08/2022 15:02

Hugo sounds pretentious and the H has a strange sound (Heeoo) rather than H as ih Hugs.

Lorenzo or Enzo are both lovely.
