Edmund, Lorenzo (Enzo) or Hugo

I have 3 very different names in my top 3 and would love your honest thoughts and opinions!

Edmund feels like a fairly safe option, nice and classic

Lorenzo is a bit more ‘out there’ for us but I love how it sounds with our surname and would be nice for the baby to be the only ‘Enzo’ in his class

I’ve always loved Hugo but worry it’s a bit popular and pretentious

I like Lorenzo but more the idea of it than reality, I don't love Enzo and it would end up as that nn
Edmund is one I'm undecided about, I also think of Narnia and it has a slightly fuddy duddy feel to it. Love nn Eddie etc though
I think Hugo would have definitely felt pretentious about 5-10 years ago, but now will be common across social groups- I can think of a couple

What about Leandro? nn Andro

I love the name Edmund, I think it really suits a baby but also is a serious name for an adult. If you're worried about the nickname Ed/Eddie you could go for Osmund - which is pretty old-fashioned - but then has the adorable nickname Ossy/Ozzy.

I also agree that although I love the name Hugo - I have heard it previously used as a fake name in a joke about posh ppl

ZenNudist · 09/08/2022 00:16

Edmund is great
Hugo good and not pretentious
Lorenzo only if you're Italian and then not even then.

JumpTheGun · 09/08/2022 00:21

I think you have to have an Italian connection to use Lorenzo

TheBikiniExpert · 09/08/2022 08:13

I'm in Italy and my kids know a lot of Lorenzos but none of them get called Enzo which is a bit old fashioned. Some are Lori which I like! Enzo can also be short for Vincenzo.

TheBikiniExpert · 09/08/2022 08:20

Also I don't really like the English pronunciation of Italian names ending in o. Just doesn't sound great imo.

We add a W, don't we? Lorenzow!

TheBikiniExpert · 09/08/2022 08:48

Yes, my sons have names that end in o and our English relatives pronounce them to rhyme with "go" whereas in Italian it's closer to the vowel sound in "got". Also the r is different.

@LittleMrsMama sorry to burst your bubble but he might not be the only Enzo. My DS has an Enzo in his class (short for Vincenzo) and DD has an Enzo in her class which is his full name. There’s never a guarantee. They both also have a Hugo in their class.

Edmund is a very ugly name

Hugo is nice and not pretentious at all. Quite common round here.

MrsMontyD · 09/08/2022 09:11

I like Edmund, makes me think of the Tudors. He will be known as Eddie though, at least by his mates, which I'm not keen on.

ILoveCreamCrackersMe · 09/08/2022 09:36

Enzo has become pretentious recently.

Think SAHM yummy mummy blogger, rubbing the top of some blonde mop haired thing as she speaks to the camera:

"oh Enzo just loves his Gazpacho, there's nothing more he wants to eat after a hard day discovering new experiences"

Also, it seems to be a common dog name near me

Hugo is just a no, unless you want your kid to be bullied.

Edmund is the best of that bunch imo

What's pretentious about him liking Gazpacho?Confused

Lorenzo, or just Enzo, by the widest of country miles.

Imaginary · 10/08/2022 15:01

I love Edmund!
Hugo is also nice.
Don't really like Lorenzo.

sageandbasil · 10/08/2022 21:51

Enzo!

LittleMrsMama · 15/08/2022 07:11

Thanks for all your comments and opinions! I’ve read through them all and agree with them all which hasn’t really helped me get to an answer on those 3 names but has helped me realise maybe I need to have a think about some other names too.

a few people asked about my surname and whether we have Italian connections. My Grandma who I was very close to and passed away just before I became pregnant was Italian but our surname is much more English sounding. Not an overly popular English surname like smith, tailor etc though

Enjoy is lovely. I really don't like Edmund 🙈

NessieMcNessface · 15/08/2022 08:43

LOVE Hugo.

Littleduck80 · 15/08/2022 08:46

Not read all thread so someone may have already said this, but Enzo is not as uncommon as you think it is.

I've heard the name Enzo repeatedly shouted in various places in the past week alone. So much that I actually commented to DH yesterday how suddenly every kid seems to be called Enzo. I wouldn't bank on him being the only Enzo in his class.

LittleMrsMama · 15/08/2022 11:33

Thank you! I hadn’t realised it’s so popular until I posted here, just must not be popular in the small circle of mums i know/kids at nursery but much more popular beyond that.

why are baby names so hard! Thanks for all the help everyone
