Ophelia nn Hallie?

Hi! Do you think Hallie could be a suitable nickname for Ophelia? I think Hellie would work as 'hel' features in Ophelia, but would Hallie work?

It's a bit of a reach trying to get Hallie from Ophelia.

I'd rather be called Hallie given the choice. Ophelia is one of those names that's too open to 'hilarious' gags.

I mean anything could be a nick name but I’m not sure that Hallie is a natural diminutive of Ophelia - how are you pronouncing Ophelia?

We are Italian so in our accent it sounds like 'Off-eell-ee-ah' hence the suggestion 'Hellie'!

@user772263 That still sounds nothing like hellie, sorry.

What about Ilaria?

pinklavenders · 02/08/2022 16:15

Everyone pronounces it Off eell ee ah.

Natural nicknames include Offie or Feely.

pinklavenders · 02/08/2022 16:16

as 'hel' features in Ophelia

But it's pronounced not hel but fel Confused

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 02/08/2022 16:16

She would be bound to be a Phee. Really hard to avoid it.

Feely is awful 😂
I think we'll go with either Hellie or Lia!

It's still part of the name, which is what's most important to us. After all, Jack can be the nickname for John and they share nothing but the first initial!

Having thought about it, I think we've decided to go with either Hellie or Lia!

Any nickname can be used. People have all sorts of nicknames, often bearing no relation to the name. The name Elizabeth has been around for so long that many nicknames that people would consider acceptable have evolved over the centuries. They all started somewhere. Use the nickname you want. It doesn't matter if not everyone uses it or they pick a different one. There aren't rules, even though some people stress about "incorrect" ones being used. I knew a Dot short for Charlotte growing up. It was deemed incorrect on a mumsnet thread, but in real life no one cared and it was used fondly.

Ophelia -> Fifi, surely?

Halle is its own name, as in Halle Berry.

Babdoc · 02/08/2022 16:45

Bit of a shame to name her after a mentally disturbed Shakespearean suicide victim rejected by Hamlet, no?
And as PPs have pointed out, the kids at school will have a field day with calling her things such as “O feel yer tits”.

PleaseMind · 02/08/2022 17:13

Iia maybe but hellie is so convoluted I hate it

Considering the character isn't a real person, we don't mind! Nobody would have reservations about naming their child Tom incase people thought they'd named him after Tom Riddle 😂

We're quite set on Ophelia and have made the decision to go with the nickname Hellie or Lia ☺️

That's ok! Thanks for the feedback ☺️
We quite like it so I think we're going to use it!

Hellie might shorten to Hell Shock

ChagSameachDoreen · 03/08/2022 15:25

In what universe would Hallie be a nickname for Ophelia. There's no "hal" in the name at all.

It's like saying "Her name is Sarah, short for Elizabeth."

Sofiabella · 03/08/2022 15:32

I've never heard of Hallie as short for Harriet either.

Neither had I but it turns out, it is!

I guess in the same universe that Jack is short for John, Peggy is short for Margaret and Ted is short for Edward!

I read a book with a character called Halcyon. Hallie could be short for that.

Sally872 · 03/08/2022 16:41

If you wouldn't use harriet due to family member then i woouldnt plan to use the same nickname either.

I dont think it is a natural shortening of Ophelia but if you introduce child as Hallie that is what she will be called.

Ofelia doesn’t even have an H in it in Italian? She would be Ellie to all your Italian relatives.

marshmallowhearts · 03/08/2022 20:09

Hallie and Hellie are not short for Ophelia in any language and make no sense.
Your examples are old names that have evolved over the centuries for extra nicknames due to popularity/to avoid confusion.
John —> Johnkin —> Jackin—> Jack
Margaret —> Mag —> Meg —> Peg
Edward —> Ed —> Ted
They are already accepted and known.
