Matilda

This is a name I have always liked and have only realised it's increasing popularity since using MN. We already refer to the bump as Tilly so will probably struggle to change it now but I always wanted a name that was bit different!

How many do you know?

All the names I like seem to be pretty popular so I obviously completely lack imagination. So also, how BAD is it to have a very popular name?

Sorry if this has been done before, it's been a long week so haven't spent time searching the archive.

Great name statistics

I almost called my dd Matilda, muy mum was truly gutted when i changed my mind!

LoveAngel · 22/01/2008 17:28

I love it. Think Mattie & Tilly are both cool nicknames, too.

LoveAngel · 22/01/2008 17:30

not Tilda as a nickname! i just think of basmati rice, sorry!

matimum · 28/01/2008 14:45

My 8 month dd is called Matilda. We haven't yet found another one!!

Its not on the list of top 100 names so that made me happy! We thought we would probably shorten it to Tilly when she's older but now we think she will probably be a Matti. She's showing signs of being a tomboy already!! lol.

Hope you've managed to make a decision. Have you condsidered middle names?

goingfor3 · 28/01/2008 14:52

My bump is called Matilda though I may change my mind once she is born. Don't like any of the shortened forms though Poeple where I live llok at me like I'm crazy for even thinking about calling her Matilda but I've always loved the name.

DazedEmma · 07/06/2008 13:26

I have just asked a similar question to this on another thread. I love Matilda but because it's such a lovely name.

What is a nice shortened version? Can anyone think of a similar name that isn't quite so popular?

MATILDA

by: Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953)

WHO TOLD LIES, AND WAS BURNED TO DEATH

ATILDA told such Dreadful Lies,
It made one Gasp and Stretch one's Eyes;
Her Aunt, who, from her Earliest Youth,
Had kept a Strict Regard for Truth,
Attempted to Believe Matilda:
The effort very nearly killed her,
And would have done so, had not She
Discovered this Infirmity.
For once, towards the Close of Day,
Matilda, growing tired of play,
And finding she was left alone,
Went tiptoe to the Telephone
And summoned the Immediate Aid
Of London's Noble Fire-Brigade.
Within an hour the Gallant Band
Were pouring in on every hand,
From Putney, Hackney Downs, and Bow.
With Courage high and Hearts a-glow,
They galloped, roaring through the Town,
'Matilda's House is Burning Down!'
Inspired by British Cheers and Loud
Proceeding from the Frenzied Crowd,
They ran their ladders through a score
Of windows on the Ball Room Floor;
And took Peculiar Pains to Souse
The Pictures up and down the House,
Until Matilda's Aunt succeeded
In showing them they were not needed;
And even then she had to pay
To get the Men to go away!

It happened that a few Weeks later
Her Aunt was off to the Theatre
To see that Interesting Play
The Second Mrs. Tanqueray.
She had refused to take her Niece
To hear this Entertaining Piece:
A Deprivation Just and Wise
To Punish her for Telling Lies.
That Night a Fire did break out--
You should have heard Matilda Shout!
You should have heard her Scream and Bawl,
And throw the window up and call
To People passing in the Street--
(The rapidly increasing Heat
Encouraging her to obtain
Their confidence) -- but all in vain!
For every time she shouted 'Fire!'
They only answered 'Little Liar!'
And therefore when her Aunt returned,
Matilda, and the House, were Burned.

Think I'll choose to overlook that haha

SSSandy2 · 07/06/2008 14:46

Always makes me think of this song:

"Matilda, she take me money and run Venezuela"

Matilda is a pretty name, prefer it to Tilly, which is a bit girly girly.
It is very popular - I know lots from about age 5 downwards (and a few from about 80 upwards!!)- but if this doesnt bother you then no problem.

Hulababy · 07/06/2008 21:26

I adore the name Matilda, and really like the shortening of Tilly too.

I don't careless about how popular a name is. To me it is only poular because it is so nice.

And FWIW I actually only know of one Matilda - a girl who was in DD's school who left for high school last year. So none in friend/peer/colleague group at all.

bettybeetroot · 09/06/2008 14:22

Matilda is a lovely name - I only know one (my niece) - it is the top uk 100 girls names list but so is my dd's and i don't know many with her name. I don't think it's 'bad' to have a popular name - aslong as you like it!

tryingtoleave · 10/06/2008 09:50

You beat me, savoycabbage - I was about to quote too.

I think a popular name is only a problem if it is a problem for you.

lalalonglegs · 10/06/2008 10:07

Just named dd2 Matilda - was a bit shocked to see it made top 20 in our LA's most popular names last year but does it really matter? Lovely name after all.

You cd always spell it Mathilda or call her Matilde to be different...

DazedEmma · 17/06/2008 14:10

Can I just ask, those on this thread with a baby Matilda, what middle name(s)did you choose?

TodayToday · 18/06/2008 13:18

I know two girls called Tilly.

I quite like Mattie as a nickname for Matilda.... though i accept I could be alone there.

ruddynorah · 18/06/2008 13:23

my matilda has two middle names. one is joan (yes, shocking to most people!!) because that's my gran's name (who brought me up), it is my MIL's name, and it was my mother's middle name (who died when i was little). her other middle name is my maiden name. so all in all she has a very 'old lady' name! we love it though, holds a lot of meaning.

dinny · 18/06/2008 13:23

my friend has a Tilda

I think Matilda/Tilda and Tilly are lovely.

sweetkitty · 18/06/2008 13:26

I think it is a lovely name as well.

Would have seriously considered it for DD3 had it not been for a) DP not liking it although he liked Tilda and b) Tilly really doesn't go with surname

MissingMyHeels · 18/06/2008 13:28

I did go for Matilda in the end and it suits her so well and am yet to meet another one!

Her middle names are family names and a bit of a mouthful, she is Matilda Eleanor Margaret (and breathe...) and whilst long actually go very nicely with the surname. It sounds quite poetic even
