Sister for Maeve- which of these names

Grace
Or
Orla

Which of those? Husband is Welsh and I am Irish. I'd prefer a Welsh name this time around but not many that go with Maeve and it also needs to be easy to pronounce and spell!

Love Grace (it was on our list of we had a girl) if that helps ☺️

MerryMarigold · 29/07/2022 05:26

I live Maeve. Not keen on these too. Grace is everywhere which isn't really fair considering Maeve is unusual AND beautiful. Orla I find a bit ugly (sorry!).

There's lots of lovely Welsh names. I'm not Welsh so not many suggestions but Seren and Carys spring to mind. (Charis/ Karis is Greek for Grace and pronounced same as the Welsh name).

Twizbe · 29/07/2022 06:03

I like orla ... Grace is everywhere at the moment.

Agree that Cerys / Carys would be a better welsh option.

FlippinOmicron · 29/07/2022 06:41

I too love Seren and Carys.
Not so keen on Orla.
Grace is nice.
I think Maeve and Seren or Maeve and Carys are lovely together - the Irish/Welsh background of your little family.

PancakesWithCheese · 29/07/2022 07:19

Orla is nice. Bored of Grace if I’m honest, it’s everywhere.

CaffiSaliMali · 29/07/2022 07:33

Both nice but Orla is the better option with Maeve. Seems a shame to have one DD with a name reflecting some of her heritage and the other DD to not have the same.

I agree with you re: a Welsh name so both sides are reflected but if you can't find one you both like then another Irish name is nice with Maeve. You could consider a Welsh middle name too.

Cadi
Carys
Cerys
Mali
Mari
Mabli
Tesni
Alys
Seren
Nia
Eleri
Teleri
Eira
Eirlys
Efa
Aneira
Anwen
Ffion

Mabli, Mari and Mali are probably a bit too similar to Maeve but some of the others might work.

FlippinOmicron · 29/07/2022 07:39

Eleri is a lovely Welsh name too and would be so nice with Maeve.

SundayTeatime · 29/07/2022 07:43

Neither Grace or Orla are Welsh, though.
I do like Grace, but maybe its time has passed for now. The Graces I know are in their mid-20s at least. I like Orla too, but it’s not very Welsh.

MaudieTipstaff · 29/07/2022 07:48

I'm not usually one for having alliterative names for siblings but Maeve and Mabli are just lovely together.

neonleopard · 29/07/2022 07:48

Maeve and Grace sounds a bit like Amazing Grace when I say it in my head! On that basis, prefer Orla.

Mumofgirls2017 · 29/07/2022 08:00

Orla. I’m not keen on grace

KirstenBlest · 29/07/2022 08:27

Orla of the two, but it is increasingly popular and doesn't sound nice in an english accent

Carys and Cerys are frumpy and middle-aged. Seren is naff. Names like Eleri get mispronounced and misspelt. Ffion too similar to Fionn.

Erin is popular. I'm not keen but it would work.

romdowa · 29/07/2022 08:33

Isn't gwen Welsh? I think it would be adorable with meave. Out of the two you have posted , I'd pick orla over grace.

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/07/2022 08:39

I’m another one that thinks Carys goes well with Maeve. So many lovely Welsh girl’s names - I also love Ffion, Catrin, Olwen, Bronwen, Gwyneth, Gwen.. there are loads and they all go with Maeve.

I’d go back and have a look, it would be a shame not to get your Welsh ancestry in there.

Grace has been done to death. Orla is ok.

Cerys Matthews doesn’t say frumpy to me, and outside of Wales it certainly isn’t well used enough to have any rep

Seren had a burst of popularity but not excessive

Ffion is lovely - and Fionn is much rarer in the Uk so that simply doesn’t matter

Many names get slightly mispronounced when they move languages, sometimes for the better (eg Caitlin)

Opinions are one thing but you are being silly here. Have some helpful suggestions as well as (deeply) random criticisms.

KirstenBlest · 29/07/2022 09:03

@Luredbyapomegranate, Cerys Matthews is in her 50s, and Cerys/Carys were very popular names for 1960s babies, Carys in the north and Cerys in the south. CM's not frumpy, she's great, and my username was inspired by her.
Cerys will get Cerise and other manglings.

Olwen, Bronwen, Gwyneth etc will get misspelt and mispronounced, which is something OP doesn't want. I'm not being silly, I am being practical. Those three names aren't very 'current'.

I'd suggest Nia or Elin, but Nia will get Nigh-uh or Nee-uh. Elin will be yet another El name.

I'd go for Niamh with a pretty welsh name as a middle name

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 29/07/2022 09:07

I have a friend with an Orla -she is 9. It's lovely. I know a Grace who is 2. Are you religious at all? Grace sounds like it has religious connotations to me. Like Faith perhaps.
I like Seren (it means star ⭐️)

LadyEloise1 · 29/07/2022 10:27

Maeve and Mabli would be lovely together.

LadyEloise1 · 29/07/2022 10:31

Is Elin the Welsh girl's name pronounced
Eel in ( as in eel ) ?
or
El ( to rhyme with bell ) in ?

PeanutButterOnToad · 29/07/2022 10:40

I like Orla. Una would be another option

KirstenBlest · 29/07/2022 11:12

@LadyEloise1, more like ELL-een.
Like Ellen but the ending is somewhere between 'in' and a very short 'een'.

E is never pronounced EE. The name Enid is actually ENN-id not EE-nid

LadyEloise1 · 29/07/2022 11:14

Thank you. @KirstenBlest

KirstenBlest · 29/07/2022 11:32

@MagnoliatheMagnificent , it's the Welsh word for star, so it is like naming your child Star, like in gold star or film star. It seems very popular.

I'd not name a child Star, so it seems a bit naff

SalviaOfficinalis · 29/07/2022 11:37

I also think a Welsh name would be lovey.

Out of Orla and Grace I’d choose Orla. Grace is very overused… although Orla is getting very popular too.

Maeve is such a great name and I think neither of the two you’ve suggested are as strong.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 29/07/2022 11:38

I wouldn't name my child 'Star' but Seren is pretty. Lots of names have supposed meanings no one thinks about. It's just an idea.
My dd's name means 'Light' but I'd hardly call her that!
