Anyone with/knows an Amelia - what are her nicknames?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently pregnant with baby #2 and playing around with names. I don't know the gender yet. Boys names come easily to me, but really struggling with girls names.

I do really love Amelia - but I feel pretty much everyone will shorten it. For any parents of an Amelia - or know someone with that name - what do you call them? I've heard of Amy and Lia (Leah) mostly as nicknames.
Do people confuse her nickname for her actual name?

(I would call my daughter Amy or Leah and avoid this issue, but we already know people/have family with these names so can't)

I know a Millie (age 6) and a Mimi (age 5). Both also answer to Amelia

You might want to be aware that Amelia is also a medical term for a particular condition, which may not bother you at all but perhaps best to be aware of during your decision making process. Especially if she grows up to be a doctor!

The one I know is Milly

mrsfoof · 25/07/2022 23:31

I know a few Amelias. They are known as:

Millie / Milly
Mia
Moo

Mimi

I know a Mai (pronounced like may)

puddingandsun · 26/07/2022 00:11

It's a beautiful name. If the family doesn't use nicknames, I doubt any will stick. I wouldn't let that influence my decision too much.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 26/07/2022 00:27

I know one who is Amy.

VixenAndCub · 26/07/2022 01:44

Gosh, so many variations that all seem to be their own stand alone names... I'd wish for her to just be Amelia if I can help it, but don't want to be That Parent and correct people either... As much as I love the full name, maybe I should avoid it if it's going to be shortened to so many things.

(Would go for Emilia, but my cousin's daughter is Emily, don't want to step on any toes).

We have loads of them in DD class. We call them either by their surnames or Meels

missgraciea · 22/03/2025 21:25

Mimi

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 25/03/2025 11:26

My daughter's (Amelia) nickname is Spig. Can't remember why now - used to be Amy.

Firsttimebabymummy · 25/03/2025 14:13

I know of 2.
One is always Amelila, never shortened. And the other is Millie.

RuthW · 25/03/2025 16:18

Millie

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 25/03/2025 22:24

I've known two who were Milly, and the rest were just Amelia.

SpeedyBulletTrain · 27/03/2025 23:18

Millie
Mia
Amy

Waynettaaa · 23/04/2025 15:20

We have an Amelia and it has never been shortened. Everyone uses her full name.
