Do you like this? Ds1 Jacob.
Thoughts appreciated and would also love to know what teachers think ;)

My husband's cousin has a nearly 3 year old Finn. It really suits him and I much prefer just Finn compared to Finley, Finnian, Finnick etc. He's actually the only little Finn I know

MyBottomDecides · 21/07/2022 14:11

Never felt the love for this as a name. Unless you're Finnish? Otherwise it just conjures up fishy thoughts for me. I'm clearly in the minority judging by the number of Finns around!

Tulipvase · 21/07/2022 14:14

I’m a TA and have a son called Finn.

So obviously I like it!

Not as common now (mine is nearly 14) and personally I’m not as keen on Finlay/Finley/Fynnlay(!)

Half of my family is Irish so that’s why I went for Finn.

AverageJoan · 21/07/2022 14:14

I don't know any kids called Finn but I do like it as a name!

Staynow · 21/07/2022 14:18

I love it.

A Finn is a person from Finland 🇫🇮

Like a Swede or Dane.

I really don't like it as a name (unless you are Finnish)

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 21/07/2022 15:04

I like Finn, great name.

pinklavenders · 21/07/2022 15:05

Jacob is much nicer

WalkingOnSonshine · 21/07/2022 15:08

Nice enough, one of many in a class along with Theo, Noah etc.

And it's also a name!

Whaddaboutthat?

Mind blown.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/07/2022 15:09

I know a delightful Finn so I'm biased. One of the nicest boys I know.

ApolloandDaphne · 21/07/2022 15:23

It's a fairly popular name in Scotland. I know a few. I like it.

Dora26 · 21/07/2022 15:26

Finn is the anglicisation of a celtic name Fionn (pronounced Fyonn). i like it - but I’m biased as am Irish

It's also an Anglicisation of the Irish word Fionn, which means fair or blonde.

Fionn is also a boy's name, commonly Anglicised outside of Ireland to Finn. Fionn MacCumhaill (Finn McCool) is a famous figure in Irish mythology. Fionn is pronounced more like "Fyunn".

Both are lovely names 💐

FleasAndKeef · 21/07/2022 15:37

Just to throw an alternative in the mix- have you considered Fenn?

Old English origin meaning "marsh/fen"

Solosunrise · 21/07/2022 15:46

I like it. I know a very nice little Finn, and it works well as they grow up

easyday · 21/07/2022 16:12

Yea I know a couple Finns. I don't love it but it's fine. The boys are nice at any rate.

Aorh · 21/07/2022 22:40

Love it. I don’t like any of the long versions and wanted a full name with options so it came off the list but I love it.

Goodnewsday · 22/07/2022 00:26

Teacher here, I teach infants and although this name has become popular with babies and toddlers, it hasn’t reached school age where I stay. I’ve still never taught one!

It was my number one boy’s name but I couldn’t use it due to a family connection. I adore it! We ended up going with another name that the popularity of almost put me off. I’ve also never taught anyone with that name either but since naming him I hear it all the time 🙈 I say ignore the popularity thing and just go for it

roundpegsquareholes · 22/07/2022 00:40

Love the name but as a hunger games fab could you go for finnick?! Could be either Finn or Nick for short

YerWanIsGettinNotions · 22/07/2022 00:56

Love it, used it. DH has “Finbar” as a family name which he hates, but we thought Finn was a suitable homage while also being a proper name in its own right.

DS keeps having people call him Finlay, which he hates. He’s a mouthy child so he will loudly correct them.

I’ve only ever had a couple of comments about “not liking the trend for using nicknames instead of lovely full names” which makes me see red. It’s a full name in MY culture, thank you very much.

ShrillSiren22 · 22/07/2022 01:01

It’s a perfectly nice name. It’s certainly one of the most popular names round here (SW England), I think there’s one (either Finn, Finley, Finlay) in every class class at DS’s school.

LizzieAnt · 22/07/2022 19:32

I like Finn. It's an older spelling of the Irish Fionn (which is often pronounced Fyun, but is pronounced Finn in the north of Ireland I think).

romdowa · 22/07/2022 19:33

It can also be used as short for finbar, I know several who use this nn

OldYork · 22/07/2022 19:34

Scotland very popular…I know about 8 under the age of 8. It’s a lovely name though and I wouldn’t let that put me off
