JellyBellyNelly Zaaa id or Zaaa heed?

Zaaa id

TheUnexpectedPickle · 19/07/2022 20:34

I had a colleague called Zahid, pronounced Zah-heed. I always thought that was a lovely name, and quite unusual. He said its a little used form of Sayed.

I might be biased though, because he is just the most lovely man.

handbagsandholidays · 19/07/2022 20:37

I read Zaid and Zayd rather than Z-eyed but can see how it could be either either.

KirstenBlest · 19/07/2022 20:54

@TheUnexpectedPickle , they are not the same name or the same meaning

JustMaggie · 19/07/2022 21:36

If your son is going to grow up in the Arab world all those names are nice. But if he's growing up here in the UK, I would suggest a name that can easily be pronounced by the British. We named our daughter Yasmine, and it gets pronounced "yaz-meen"over here. She's given up on trying to get people to pronounce it right and now wants to change her name to "Elle" 🙄

KirstenBlest · 20/07/2022 09:30

How should it be said, @JustMaggie ?

JustMaggie · 20/07/2022 09:52

The Arabic pronunciation is "yes-MEEN"

It’s pronounced without the z sound. It’s an S. Yasmeen.

KirstenBlest · 20/07/2022 10:13

Thanks. I know a Yasmin (white, english heritage) and a Yasmina (maghrebi heritage)
Yasmin is YAS-min or Yas, Yasmina is Yas-MEEN-ah.

I'd sayياسمين as Yas-meen not Yes-meen

KirstenBlest · 20/07/2022 10:42

Not my name though.

Having to correct pronunciation and/or spelling can be a PITA. Some people are ok with it and others not.
The thing is though that a lot of people dislike being corrected, and if you don't correct them they won't know they got it not quite right.
Some people will just not get the difference between Yaz-min and Yes-meen or Om-arr and Ohm-AAAAH

Usually an ‘a’ sound at the end of a name indicates female.

Salim is male. Salima is female.

JellyBellyNelly · 20/07/2022 10:50

Sorry. I just think Yasmina is one of the many forms Yasmin can take

Fair enough, I'm only going by what he told me.
I assume he jus wasn't particularly interested in name meanings!

Sayid means noble or high ranking. So for example a Minister or a Prince would be called Sayid Bader.

Zahid is something completely different.

Currently there is a trend for traditional Arabic names, particularly names of prophets - in DS's year 1 year group, there are 6 little boys called Elias/ilias/ilia.

I'm currently loving more modern names like Haider, Leith, Xavier/Javier, Erdem.

KirstenBlest · 20/07/2022 12:26

Sayeed means happy

goldfinchonthelawn · 20/07/2022 12:41

I love Elias.

Gypsophiladaisy · 20/07/2022 14:56

elias is beautiful

Mummyxxxx · 20/07/2022 15:28

@JustMaggie I could move to an Arab country in the future and Ali is easily pronounced by the British.

If you move to an Arab country in the Gulf beware that the name Ali is very much associated with the "Shiaa". If you're Christian I would go with Elias or something more neutral.

Mummyxxxx · 20/07/2022 16:10

@SasuJones Khaled is also on my husbands list on names

OP posts:
Mummyxxxx · 20/07/2022 16:18

I don't think that would be an issue @JustMaggie

They're all nice, but I'd choose Yousef :)

JellyBellyNelly · 20/07/2022 17:35

KirstenBlest · 20/07/2022 12:26

Sayeed means happy

No. That’s a different word to the one mentioned above.

And the name generally associated with happy is Farhan or Farhana for a girl.

I’m sorry, but that’s not the case.
