Too similar?

eatsleepeatrepeat · 08/07/2022 12:00

So I have a little boy already - Ronan. We have another on the way and as soon as we found out he was a boy too we've loved the name Rory. So Ronan and Rory.

Now it's getting closer to my due date I'm worrying they are too similar - any thoughts?

I know a Rowan and Rory never thought it to be too similar.
I think Ronan and Rory sound lovely together.

RuthW · 08/07/2022 12:16

Not similar at all

pinklavenders · 08/07/2022 15:33

Way too similar!

ChagSameachDoreen · 08/07/2022 15:34

Way too similar.

Also Rory is a dreadful name.

pinklavenders · 08/07/2022 15:36

Imagine if your ds can't pronounce his Rs properly Shock

OneCup · 08/07/2022 15:38

I'd say too similar.

beenaroundtheblox · 08/07/2022 15:40

Sound like you're trying to get them similar. Very 'twin'names. Both nice though so go with it if you like them.

Pac35 · 08/07/2022 15:44

I think they're perfect together

PuffinMcStuffin · 08/07/2022 15:45

I think it's OK but you aren't allowed to get shitty if people get them muddled up. I know a family with two boys with similar names and I cannot remember which one is which for the life of me!

LT2 · 08/07/2022 15:50

Funny how mixed opinions can be! I think it's OK personally. They sound completely different. Just start with the same 2 letters.

What a nasty and unkind comment. The OP didn't ask whether people liked them or not.

I think they are a bit too similar but it doesn't really matter. I called two of my four kids names beginning with the same sound and I tripped over their names quite a lot. That might just have been me though. I don't think it ever mattered though.

It's good for family members to have different initials though. I'm amazed at how much official post is sent addressed to 'initial surname' rather than 'first name surname' The kardashian household must have had quite a problem with that

I don't think they're too similar.

Too samey

So funny you said that - until I was about 8 I would pronounce R/s as L/s ... hopefully my DS won't have the same problem! 🙈

Thanks for the feedback! I'm thinking even if half of people think it's too similar then that's ok, it was only if everyone thought Nooooooo!

They'll be very close in age, Irish twins, so I don't mind it being quite 'twin-like' if that makes sense!

Came on to say, both are nice names....my main issue is when they are older and post is delivered to Mr. R.Eatsleeprepeat (mind you by the time they're old enough to get post it'll all be email)

Am rolling my eyes at the use of the derogatory term Irish twins!

Mischance · 08/07/2022 17:04

No problem that I can see/hear. They will part and lead their own lives in the end of course, so it becomes irrelevant.

Princessoftheuniverse · 08/07/2022 17:54

Not too similar. Nothing wrong with either name. It’s just personal taste. I love Rory.

I am Irish and I don't find it derogatory, roll your eyes all you want!

Too similar IMO.

User6761 · 08/07/2022 21:29

I love the name Ronan, was on our list.

I'm Scottish and also on our list was Ruairidh. Would the Irish version Ruairi be an option? (I'm presuming it's pronounced same as in Scotland 'Roo-a-ray'). That goes well with Ronan as the names start with different sounds - Ro and Ru.

FWIW I know siblings Rory and Rose, doesn't seem to cause them any problems.

resm · 08/07/2022 21:29

I don’t think they’re too similar at all, I think they go quite nicely actually. Ronan & Rory sound like a great wee pair to me. Congratulations!

Haha I loved Ruairi (like all the different ways of spelling it too!) but DH is English and his accent somewhat butchers the sound of it - his words not mine! 🙈 so we went with Rory! Would've been a great suggestion otherwise though!

They're fine. I know lots of people whose children's names sound similar especially the endings my boys names have the same sound at the end. I know someone who has three girls and their names all end with an a as does her name. I don't think people will really think about it or care.
