I love both but would use Phoebe. Even though we’re 20 years on, Hermione just screams Harry Potter to me.

LiveSimply · 08/07/2022 05:59

Phoebe <3 beautiful name!

AmandaMirandaPanda · 08/07/2022 06:00

I prefer Phoebe, just based on the sound. There's something about the "(h)erm", I think, that sounds harsh to me.

Flangelica · 08/07/2022 06:34

Thanks for the thoughts!

Middle name for either would be Joy as it's a family name.

I love both names but have concerns with both - Hermione too HP as a PP said, Phoebe too popular

Phoebe Joy is beautiful. Congratulations on your upcoming arrival OP.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 08/07/2022 07:56

I like both names but dislike the way Phoebe gets abbreviated to Pheebs. I don't know what Hermione gets abbreviated to but chances are that I wouldn't like it 😄

Windbeneathmybingowings · 08/07/2022 08:00

Phoebe as it’s fewer syllables to get your mouth round.

Luxa · 08/07/2022 08:06

Hermione, nickname Mimi.

DontLikeCoffee · 08/07/2022 08:14

I know a grown up Hermione and it never occurs to me to think HP when I see her, because it’s just her name. And that would be the same as your DD.

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 08/07/2022 08:18

I love Hermione. It's such a cool name, would be a shame to hand over all rights to it to HP!

Phoebe is nice too but I know too many for it to feel special to me.

Hermione Joy 👌🏼

KirstenBlest · 08/07/2022 08:31

@Luxa,How on earth would you get Mimi out of Hermione?

It's from the 'mi', I have seen Mimi suggested as a nickname for Hermione on several occasions.

Thank you for the replies everyone!

Does the Hermione you know get her name shortened?

OP posts:
DinosaursEatMan · 08/07/2022 11:11

Hermione, because it’s a cool name (I loved it even before HP), and the HP character is a strong female lead so no bad associations for me.

Phoebe I don’t like the sound of and it reminds me instantly of Friends in a negative way.

DinosaursEatMan · 08/07/2022 11:14

Also agree that Mimi would be a good nickname, if you did want to shorten it, though that tends to get taken out of your hands as soon as the dc are old enough to express an opinion!

BookwormButNoTime · 08/07/2022 11:19

Hermione gets shortened to Mina, Hem, Hum, Mimi, NeeNee and Herms. I have one and these are the various names she has been called!!!!

Exactly this

Flangelica · 08/07/2022 14:09

Do you think Phoebe and Hermione 'go' as sisters if I couldn't choose and wanted to use the other name for a sibling? It's such a tough decision but knowing i could use the other name later would make it more bearable having to choose now 😂

toastofthetown · 08/07/2022 14:29

I much prefer Hermione, even with the Harry Potter connection. Phoebe is a total snooze to me.

Flangelica · 08/07/2022 14:40

I like both names because they're the names of strong biblical women. Phoebe was obviously named in the bible as a deacon(ess) but Hermione was the name of one of Philip's daughters, a 'prophetess' who was especially selfless and caring in the early church. She wasn't named in the bible as anything other than a daughter of Philip, but was name in several other ancient documents. So in this sense they go perfectly together for me - i wanted strong female namesakes for my daughters to look up to, and love biblical names for their strength and age and stories attached to them - but maybe they're too different in popular culture to 'go'? As one (Phoebe) is currently very trendy and the other (Hermione) seems a little 'Harry Potter superfan' as it's been pretty rare other than being known through Harry Potter 🤔

(I genuinely love the sound of both names)

SpaceJamtart · 08/07/2022 14:49

I like Hermione a lot more, it doesn't say harry potter super fan to me as it is also a regular name in the uk, just like being called Harry, Tom, Molly, George, Charlie etc but Bellatrix, Sirius, Luna, Albus etc would.

I know two adults called Hermione- one is always called Hermione and the other goes by Nina and a toddler who is currently 'Miney' because her brother cant say it yet

Cocowatermelon · 08/07/2022 15:05

Hermione nick name Hermy-Own?
