Which do you prefer and why?

Fee-bee. But so many people spell it Pheobe. She gets it all the time.

How do you pronounce Phoebe?

I mean they wrote Feebie. I know that’s how you pronounce it!

Mirabai · 17/11/2022 23:42

Oh I see as in Freebie 😂

caitlinrose · 18/11/2022 00:46

I like them both a lot in theory.

I love the look, history and meaning of Phoebe.

I love the look and history of Hermione.

But when you say Phoebe out loud it just sounds like fee-bee which isn't an attractive sound or at least not nearly as attractive as they way it looks.

Hermione is quite long and I'd fear people trying to shorten it to Herm or Hermy. It also screams Hermione Granger. I love the character and it wouldn't keep me from using it if I loved it enough but J.K. Rowling isn't exactly a favourite anymore now (more like shunned by the public) and Emma Watson isn't as likable as she once was either and I feel like it just doesn't have the best image anymore.

They're both perfectly fine but I couldn't pick any as of now. I guess I'd pick Phoebe if I had to but sometimes I just hear Phoebe from "Friends" say something in my head and it puts me off (I don't hate her character but she was very specific and sometimes annoying).

Phoebe

Pemba · 18/11/2022 12:03

Hermione has always seemed quite a heavy, clunky name to me. A bit of a mouthful.

Phoebe is lighter and prettier. Plus I am currently rewatching Friends, love the character! But I would still prefer the name Phoebe anyway, I think.

RuthW · 18/11/2022 12:11

Phoebe. I just prefer as I love the shortening Phi but other is nice too.

Maybebabyno2 · 18/11/2022 22:49

Don't call her Hermione, she will forever have Harry Potter Puppet Pals sang loudly at her for ever.

Phoebe is a nice name, but just reminds me of Friends.

Thank you for clarifying this haha I was so so confused!

J.K. Rowling isn't shunned by 'the public' in the least - her sales are up, if anything! Look it up if you don't believe me.

OP, I prefer Hermione because Phoebe just sounds like 'feeble' to me.

That said, I prefer Ariadne to Hermione, and Calliope is quite nice too.

LightHousePanda · 19/11/2022 12:15

I first heard the name Phoebe in friends and didn't even know it was an established name so for me i really associate it with that character. I know you have the HP connection with Hermione but i do much prefer that name.

As a person she is. She wasn't even invited to the reunion.

People buy her books because they separate the work from the author.

Pemba · 19/11/2022 13:16

Only twats dislike JK Rowling surely? Most of them are too lazy/stupid to read what she actually wrote anyway.
She is a good and brave person.

motherofawhirlwind · 19/11/2022 13:19

Hermione every day of the week. Love it and Hermione Joy sounds beautiful.

Not sure where people get a Herm sound from. It's Her-my-oh-née, isn't it? I just hear Her as the first sound.

Spookypig · 20/11/2022 13:18

I love JK Rowling and so do most people I know! I think she’s an amazing writer and also pretty brave

Blowyourowntrumpet · 21/12/2022 08:23

Phoebe

OhGingleBells · 21/12/2022 08:35

Both names used by Shakespeare long before Harry Potter or Friends!

Hermione is a Queen in The Winter’s Tale and Phoebe (or Phebe) is a shepherdess in As You Like It.

I prefer Phoebe to Hermione but would encourage Bee or Bebe as a nickname over Phoebs. (Feebs) Phoebe Joy is lovely and Hermione would work fine as a sibling name.

Maybe have a look at lists of ‘Shakespeare’ names if you are after any more inspiration.

Pheepa · 27/12/2022 10:48

I have one of each! They have always seemed to work as sibling names for us. Neither were particularly popular when we chose them but Phoebe did become more popular, not sure how popular it currently is as ours are teenagers now. Phoebe will often be called Pheeb, not often Pheebs. Hermione usually gets Mione or very occasionally Minnie or H. I love them both, both were chosen from the biblical/Greek/traditional versions but we’ve never had an issue with the Friends/HP links
