Three week old- no name - help!

Help choosing baby name please!

Baby girl. Now three weeks old... no name!

Dad is Welsh. Mum is Irish. We'd like something reflective of our heritage (so an Irish, Welsh or Celtic name) but not so much that the spelling is wild or that there is huge difficult to pronounce.

Any ideas?!

Hmm. History and all that.

Going off-topic.

How about Eilidh or Ailsa?

mamaof3kiddos · 08/07/2022 19:01

Ok so we are between

Nansi (Welsh spelling of Nancy- husband thinks we are setting up for a lifetime of having to explain her spelling)

Orla. Although husband not keen.

Annie

Grace

Erin

I'd love Hâf as a middle name but trying to work on husband.

We liked Saoirse but we went to a party at the weekend and every single person answered with a "what was that?" when we said the name so that's out!

Our DD1 is already a Maeve so I love that it got a lot of love on this thread!

Ideally I'd prefer to go Welsh, even if she has to spell Nansi out her entire life, at least she'd explain it by reference to her Welsh heritage

Any thoughts on these?!

Nansi is lovely, I really like it. People will get used to the spelling e.g. Harri, Tomos, Alys, Mari etc.

I think it would be nice to have a Welsh name this time.

Erin is lovely and goes well with Maeve. Same with Orla. Erin Haf is a nice combo.

Grace and Annie are nice but don't have the same heritage connection as Maeve.

You could have Annie as a nickname for Anwen or Aneira if you wanted to get some extra Welsh in there.

K8Shrop · 08/07/2022 19:50

Maeve and Erin go well together. I think that would be my choice

DacwMamYnDwad · 08/07/2022 19:51

There's no circumflex on the a in Haf, @mamaof3kiddos . It's a bit of a filler middle name in Wales.

DacwMamYnDwad · 08/07/2022 19:52

You could have Annest nn Annie

blueskyeve · 09/07/2022 12:29

Erin is beautiful!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 09/07/2022 12:38

Nia
Rhian

user1469770863 · 09/07/2022 13:57

Gwen

mistygem · 09/07/2022 14:10

What about Nerys, then? I heard it means lady, and it's similar to Nancy and Nensi, with more obvious spelling and pronunciation
I would also suggest Gwen

Theoldwoman · 09/07/2022 14:14

Caitlin
Erin
Maeve
Bridget

DacwMamYnDwad · 09/07/2022 14:15

Not heard of Nensi before. Not sure about Nerys meaning Lady, but it's nice enough.

Gwen is great.

wellhelloitsme · 09/07/2022 14:16

Annie is SUCH a lovely and underused name!

Summersdreaming · 09/07/2022 14:17

Erin is lovely.

How do you go 3 weeks without a name 😅 are you just calling her 'the baby'??

moiraandthebebe · 09/07/2022 14:19

Really dislike Nansi. Love Erin.

DacwMamYnDwad · 09/07/2022 14:24

I don't like Erin at all but Elin is lovely

Tigerteafor3 · 11/07/2022 20:29

What did you go with OP?

mamaof3kiddos · 11/07/2022 22:00

We STILL haven't decided. I'm despairing.

My husband doesn't like Orla. I really do. DM also thrown a spanner in the works as she said there used to be a ventriloquist with a dog called Orla...!?

Husband has vetoed any suggestion of Nansi because we're setting her up for a lifetime of correcting her spelling.

Husband is absolutely desperate for Grace. I do like the name but my only request has been that the name is reflective of her heritage- and Grace really isn't.

Not sure I'm 100% sold on Erin.

So I have absolutely no idea! Husband is back at work now too and we're so tired in the evening to talk about it. I could compromise at Grace I guess and have Haf as the middle name (thanks PP for the correction re: â). It's so tough.

I also feel that we're kind of due a Welsh name this time given DD1 is Irish, so am slightly reluctant that if my husband got his way then neither of our daughters will have any Welsh heritage in their name. DD1 would have her Irish name and DD2 will have a very generic English name.

Maren
Mared
Bethan
Carys
Madlen

Any of those any good?

I feel for you OP it must be so tough when you both want to veto the other one's!

lazysummer · 11/07/2022 22:48

Not helpful but I am Welsh and have a Nancy. It’s a lovely underused name. I don’t spell it Nansi but people get used to different spellings. It goes well with Maeve too. Good luck with the decision- don’t be pressured into a name you don’t love.

H1Drangea · 11/07/2022 22:50

Oona Haf

Arcadia · 11/07/2022 22:57

Nia?

Imightbe · 11/07/2022 22:59

My darling Mum was Welsh and she was called Annie …beautiful name without any complicated spelling or pronunciation.

prettybird · 11/07/2022 23:07

Not RTFT but what about Lowri?

It's a wee bit unusual but when my Welsh friend said she was going to call her dd that (over 30 years ago! Shock) I said to her that it was a pretty name but that she would have to spell it a lot Wink (I can't talk as I always have to spell my surname!)

As it happens, there have been one or two famous Lowris since then. Don't think spelling was ever an issue - and she really suits her name Smile
