Just that, really - two names we're considering at the moment. Thanks!

I'm saying that Jayden and Kaiden might have tarnished a nice Irish name.

that is absolutely not what you were saying 😂

Blueberrywitch · 01/07/2022 14:08

Oscar!

Kanaloa · 01/07/2022 14:17

And even if they had, why would association with the name Kaiden (which is basically a fine name anyway) ‘tarnish’ a nice Irish name? Especially when your main defence in the first place was ‘well we’re not in Ireland.’

I wish people would just be 100% straight. Like just come out and say ‘working class and poor people use that name so it makes me think of them. I don’t like them and wouldn’t want to be associated with them. I judge their children as ‘naughty’ because I associate poor people with being less-than.’ Then at least you’d be standing on your convictions.

KirstenBlest · 01/07/2022 14:19

@Kanaloa, the names you suggested don't compare. William is a classless name and if I think of the Williams I know, they are mainly older men or 40-ish (same age as the prince) and most are Will and a few are Billy. I don't know any Jacksons IRL, but I do know many Jacks. The Sanjays I know are indian or british-indian. I don't know any Seo-joons.

😂

What does you personally not knowing any Jacksons or Seo-joons have to do with the price of mauve eggs? My point was the op could pick a name out of a hat and give it to her child and it will not affect how naughty or otherwise that child is because her parenting will be the same whether the child is card John or Jasper or Jingle-Bells.

KirstenBlest · 01/07/2022 14:32

@Kanaloa,Why are you trying to put words in my mouth?

I don't think that names are 'naughty boy's names' (NBN) because they appeal to WC parents, I think they are NBN because they appeal to the sort of parents who don't set boundaries with their children.

The name being of a certain culture doesn't make it a NBN, and it probably isn't a NBN in that culture.

If I encountered a Jingle-Bells, I'd think 'what were the parents thinking?'

JenniferBarkley · 01/07/2022 14:32

Aidan is similarly classless and timeless in Ireland as William, James etc are in England. Not new, not try hard, not down market.

KirstenBlest · 01/07/2022 14:37

@JenniferBarkley , the OP is in ireland, so that's great. Both names are fine but I prefer Aidan.

Sure. It’s just that parents who don’t sent boundaries happen to choose these names, that’s what it is. And therefore nobody who wants a well behaved child can use any of those names. Keep telling yourself it’s not snobbery, it’s just that these specific people with these names are bad people.

KirstenBlest · 01/07/2022 14:53

@Kanaloa , I didn't say that.

I'm not the only one mentioning NBN.
I'm probably no more snobbish than you are

Aidan

Or AidEn in my sons case

I’m not snobbish in the slightest. Although I concede others are spouting the same snobby silliness. But then I think their snobby and classist and a bit sad too. For me I’d love them to come to my area and meet a wealth of wonderful children with all sorts of names. Perhaps it would open their minds and make them realise there are no naughty boy or naughty girl names and in fact judging people like that doesn’t make you look ‘aspirational’ or classy as I think some people believe. It makes you look small minded and stupid.

Kanaloa · 01/07/2022 15:01

They’re snobby and classist is what I meant. It’s a bit of a sad attitude.

Felicity42 · 01/07/2022 15:02

Another vote for Oscar.

JaneJeffer · 01/07/2022 15:04

Aiden can be a bit of a naughty boys name
What?

shivawn · 01/07/2022 15:05

You're in Ireland OP? Definitely Aidan!

Or Oisín as a much much nicer alternative to Oscar!

pinkpixie83 · 01/07/2022 15:06

I have an Oscar and an Aiden so I think they are both great choices.

Both mine can be naughty at times though, but also fun and loving lads.

Oh man… maybe if you’d named them William instead. Not too late to change it though! I guarantee if you start calling them both William tonight they’ll both me in bed asleep by 8pm and will wake at 8.45am eager for a fun day of chores and homework.

The names from the celtic countries tend to be popular with a certain type
Oh my God!

spiderlight · 01/07/2022 15:08

I love them both, and had both on my list, but for me Aidan would just about squeak into the lead. Its meaning 'little fire' would have suited my feisty little redhead down to the ground.

SycamoreTall · 01/07/2022 15:23

@shivawn No, I'm in England. Can't have Oisín as I have a Niamh. 😄

I do like a good bun fight, thanks all. I am not fazed by accusations of being "down-market" for liking Irish names, fortunately.

@JaneJeffer , what I actually posted was The names from the celtic countries tend to be popular with a certain type - the names seeming fresh or there's a loose connection.

JaneJeffer · 01/07/2022 15:47

What type then @KirstenBlest ?

KirstenBlest · 01/07/2022 15:55

@JaneJeffer , the type to pick a name that seems fresh or because their tenuous connection means they'd like a celtic name (e.g. grandma was irish or whatever)

ComfyChairPose · 01/07/2022 15:56

JaneJeffer · 01/07/2022 15:47

Yes, I would love you to articulate this type as well as you can @KirstenBlest
