Thoughts on Tilly?

My partner wants Tilly for our DD (due in August) but I don't like it.
He thinks it's cute but I'm not a fan of cutesy names tbh.
I like strong, meaningful names with substance.
To me, Tilly feels very wish washy, not substantial and not a name I'd expect to find a strong character owning.
Don't like Tilly, Milly, Lilly etc... Similar reasons.
Thoughts?

Seems like it should be short for Matilda or something.

As you are the mother, you get to decide, but you both need to like it

saveforthat · 27/06/2022 12:26

Tilly is short for Matilda which is a great name imo

timoteigirl · 27/06/2022 12:31

Tilly is from Matilda which is a very strong name.

What about Trine? Trinity? Tilde? Mathilde instead of Matilda?

DontLikeCoffee · 27/06/2022 12:34

I feel exactly the same as you, it’s a nicknamey type of name with no substance. Cutsey and bland.

If you don’t both agree though, you can’t use it.

CrispieCake · 27/06/2022 12:50

I think Tilly is quite sweet as a nickname, but I wouldn't have it on the birth certificate. I'd pick something like Mathilda/Matilda, Ottilie, Nathalie/Nathalia or Felicity instead.

pixiebex86 · 27/06/2022 14:00

We are ttc and already chose matilda (tilly) if we have a girl

DramaAlpaca · 27/06/2022 14:03

I don't like cutesy names either, OP, but I do like Tilly as a diminutive of Matilda.

Matilda is strong and feisty. Put Matilda on the BC, call her Tilly when she's little - win/win.

toastofthetown · 27/06/2022 14:09

I think Tilly is bland and insipid.

If you don’t like it though, no matter if everyone on Mumsnet said they loved it unreservedly, it should be off the table. Just like how if you like a name your partner doesn’t like, that’s also out. Naming babies should be a two yes, one no situation.

rocketfromthecrypt · 27/06/2022 14:11

Tilly is awful. Complete nothing name, bland and insubstantial and saccharine.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 27/06/2022 14:18

I have a Matilda who was known as Tilly from when in the womb. Matilda is a good strong name and can be adapted in loads of different ways - Tilly being only one of them.

If you hate the name then don’t go for it though. What sort of names do you like?

wotsitsaremyfave · 27/06/2022 18:17

It's not really a first name. Is it a surname?

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 27/06/2022 18:19

Matilda could be Tilly or Matty which might suit you both

Hm2020 · 27/06/2022 18:28

I love it and may use it if I ever have another.

tiggergoesbounce · 27/06/2022 18:35

I love Tilly, it is a great name.
I love matilda as well, it is my favourite girls name.
Sorry i know that doesn't help.

Amdone123 · 27/06/2022 18:44

Tilly wouldn't be my first choice ( Matilda, I love), but we have a 2 year old Tilly in the family, and she's a delight, a real character. She owns it !
Sorry, I'm no help either !

justasking111 · 27/06/2022 18:45

Friend Natalie has always been known as Tilly I like it

lookingsusbro · 27/06/2022 18:49

Tilly as a nickname for Matilda is lovely. As a full name for a two year old it's cute, for a 30 year old woman it's far too cutesy and babyish imo.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/06/2022 18:49

What about Trine? Trinity? Tilde? Mathilde instead of Matilda?

Two of my daughters guinea-pigs were Trinity and Tilly .
Lovely names and I'd happily use Matilda for a human DD Grin

Panicmode1 · 27/06/2022 18:53

I have one. She's christened Matilda which means "battle princess" but is known as Tilly so I see it as a feisty name. She certainly takes after her name and can be super feisty...!

Mumofgirls2017 · 27/06/2022 21:44

Love Matilda so would accept short for that

DurdleSnore · 27/06/2022 22:23

I like it as a nickname but not as a stand-alone.

KosherDill · 27/06/2022 22:26

It's a nickname, and as others have said, wishy-washy.

People naming children need to think beyond age 4 or whatever, and envision an adult in a position of responsibility bearing the names they are considering.

You can nickname your child anything you want, whether it bears any relationship to the given name, but people shouldn't saddle human beings with twee and diminutive and silly names for life just because it would be cute on a toddler.

wasiwrongtoask · 27/06/2022 22:40

I don't think it's wishy washy at all! I think it's a sweet name short for Matilda which is fabulous. But If you don't care for it what about Tilda?

EmpressoftheMundane · 27/06/2022 22:51

Mathilda means mighty in battle. William the Conqueror’s wife was a Mathilda.

Lots of nicknames for Mathilda: Tilly, Tilda, Maude, Marty, Hilda.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 27/06/2022 22:54

It's very insubstantial and bitty. No oomph.
