Nooo!! Pippa is the name people give their kids to make them sound “upper class” and posh

17caterpillars1mouse · 19/06/2022 20:55

Yes for me

I always think it's a quirky but well known name.

WeasilyPleased · 19/06/2022 22:30

I strongly dislike it. It was a name used when someone was being dim when I was a kid.

ChagSameachDoreen · 19/06/2022 23:35

Horrible. It's the slang for blowjob in some European languages.

Philippa sounds like a fish flopping about on a wharf.

DramaAlpaca · 20/06/2022 00:02

Nope. It doesn't travel well in Europe as others have said.

I do like Philippa (despite the above fishy description which made me laugh) but not Pippa.

marblemad · 20/06/2022 00:06

Pippa is one on my list I love it

MrsT84 · 20/06/2022 00:09

My little girl is called Pippa. She is 9 weeks old tomorrow. I have only had compliments on her name, usually people saying how nice it is as they haven't heard it used for a while x

You unborn child is not a Brexiteer, and may someday wish to move to or work in Italy, many Brits do. I would not wish to give my child a name with such a connotation when it can be avoided.

Imissmoominmama · 20/06/2022 22:11

@SummaLuvin - I’ve had the name for 56 years, and visited Italy many times (I’m there now in fact). Nobody has been rude enough to laugh at my name yet.

Triptop · 21/06/2022 10:22

I like it.

RevoltingHumanHead · 21/06/2022 12:15

No. A dumpy pony club name.

Is your offspring destined for a life in Blighty and Blighty only? None of those awful foreign holidays for her.

SeaToSki · 21/06/2022 12:20

I have a relative with the name, she loved it as a child and with family/friends but finds it hard in the work place as she feels its not ‘grown up’ enough and makes it harder to be taken seriously. But that is just her opinion

yui · 21/06/2022 14:12

I don't like it personally. It sounds like a nickname and it means something bad in Italian. Both of those things would put me off it. You're entitled to your own opinion, of course.

Misspacorabanne · 21/06/2022 14:16

I love it op! I also like pip/ pippy (although I know I'm more or less in the minority)

MinglingFlamingo · 21/06/2022 14:20

Yes love it! But make sure of you use Philippa in BC it's double P. have a close relationship with the name and she's fab so I think the name is too

Love Pippa and Pip!

blameitonthecaffeine · 21/06/2022 15:04

I really like it.

If you don't like Philippa or Piper, I know a little Pippa short for Xanthippe?

pinklavenders · 22/06/2022 06:51

I dislike it. It sounds silly and rude at the same time.

Tinkywinkywoo · 22/06/2022 07:06

I’m not keen. Bit close to peppa.

SemperIdem · 22/06/2022 10:26

We’ve left the EU, not Europe, dear god 🙄

Pippa travels poorly, that is a fact. Lots of name probably do, but this one is well known.

By all means use the name, the “Royal connections” mentioned in this thread are bizarre , it’s a well established name in the UK.

Summerwetordry · 22/06/2022 11:01

I like it, but would give a child the full name of Philippa. Now I've read that it's slang for a b j it's put me right off.

ttcnumberthree · 22/06/2022 19:16

Like many others have said, all I hear is 'blowjob' when I hear Pippa now, after a conversation with my hairdresser who told me she couldn't believe anyone would name their child that is it's used a slang word in so many European countries.

It's unfortunate- but whether they mention it to her or not, if you name your daughter Pippa and she travels to Europe or meets someone European then they will most likely be thinking 'why would anyone name their child after a blowjob?'

It's a shame because aside from that I think it's OK as a name.

AJTraceyliveandirect · 25/06/2022 16:26

I have a Pippa and if she travels to Europe I would have as much respect for the people who think she's named after a blowjob as I would for British people laughing at the French women who are called Fanny.

I daresay everyone on here researched their favourite baby names in every language on earth just in case their child wanted to travel 🤔. Or maybe, like me, they had other reasons for choosing it (and nothing to do with Pippa Middleton) as my DD was born before we had even heard of her.
