Greek names for baby boy

maisieandvicks · 11/06/2022 09:26

I am currently 6 months pregnant with my third child. We are having a boy and I am extremely excited as we currently have two girls.

Both of our girls have traditional Greek names.

Any ideas for any traditional Greek names for a boy would be welcomed!

Are you Greek because some of these names would otherwise be kind of harsh on the child! 😅

Yes I am Greek and so is my DH.

Elias?

I absolutely love this name and this is the name I suggested to DH. He is on the fence about it at the moment but I am 100% for it.

Ah that opens the options up a bit then!

Another vote for Elias from me.

I’m also quite a fan of Apostolos. I only know one but I feel like it should be brought into fashion.

Elias for me every time - DH wanted both our boys to have this name but I vetoed him on both occasions as our surname is tricky and it seemed TOO Greek - I wish I'd used it now!

Evangelos
Vassilis
Constantinos
Georgios
All adaptable to use in the UK.

Alexendros
Christos

Asterios, I love that name and everyone I’ve know with that name has been lovely!

As a Greek, I don't think MN is the place to go for traditional greek names as some of the names suggested are definitely NOT traditional or even greek!

I think better to google in greek for name suggestions.

Or follow greek tradition and name baby after his paternal grandfather that saves some headache.

Here are some names, anyway:
Stavros
Giorgos
Nikolaos
Nikonas
Giannis (Yiannis)
Alexandros (Alexis)
Thanasis (Thanos for short)
Fotis
Pavlos
Sotiris
Argiris (actually not sure of the english spelling of this one, Αργύρης is the one I am thinking of)
Aggelos
Panagiotis (Panos)
Antonis

That sounds more Italian than Greek. Isn't it 'Yorgos' in Greek?

My favourite name for a girl is Anastasia (pronounced the Greek way) so Anastasios for a boy. Sakis (the pop star😁 🌟) for short.
My favourite boys' name though is Adonis.

Fotis
Mihalis
Kostas
Vasilis
Christos

One of my favorite musicians ever (a Greek Cypriot) was called,
Adonis Michaelides. He was known as Mick Karn. Personally, I love the name Adonis.

What are your father and father in laws names OP? Are you not going to use them?

Did you use family names for your daughters ?

1VY · 11/06/2022 17:09

I just though - do you DDs have their own name days ? If so you need a boys name that it’s own as well.

Or if one of your DD uses Ton Agion Panton then you don’t want another child that doesn’t have their own name day.

User6761 · 11/06/2022 17:13

I know a Greek boy called Leonidas and a Greek man in his 30s called Lambros. I think they're both nice names.

Goldfishmountainclimber · 11/06/2022 17:23

I thought there was a Greek tradition to name your child after a grandparent? Do you have suitable options to do this? It seems like a nice thing if the name is ok.

Squirma · 11/06/2022 21:02

Peter/Petros

The males I know with this name are shortened to Tasos. Also love Angelos, Valentinos. Kyriacos shortened to Kyri tends to be popular in the Uk as the shortened name works well.

Georgio is how my Greek SIL spells her sons name yorgo in Greeklish. It's a whole other language to learn 😆
