Will Jacob get called Jake?

Love the name Jacob, we just really don’t like Jake. I think it has a bit of a 90s feel to it and there were lots of Jakes in my year at school.

Will people automatically call Jacob, Jake?

DS1 is Reuben. Any other suggestions also welcome. So far we like Jacob, Joel, Jasper, Sebastian.

I know a Jacob and it isn't shortened to Jake. I think it is a lovely name.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 05/06/2022 17:18

Ds's friend is Jacob but, yes, they all call him Jake

MintyMoocow · 05/06/2022 17:20

You have no control over what he will call himself, my lovely Olivia has been Liv for years.
mid you don’t like the shortened version don’t use the full name.
Jake is a great name though.

cushioncovers · 05/06/2022 17:23

Yes absolutely it will

Skinnydecafflatte · 05/06/2022 17:23

i know a Jacob who is 21, never heard him be called Jake. Jacob is a fabulous name, go for it!

Pipersouth · 05/06/2022 17:23

I have a close relative called Jacob and wanted to call him Cob but his Mum vetoed it - he became a Jake but as he’s got older he wants to be called Jacob. Another Jacob I know is just “J” each to their own but it is a nice and popular name

Frankcat19 · 05/06/2022 17:25

We have a Reuben and a Jacob. Some of his friends do shorten it to Jake but he is Jacob at home and with family. He always introduces himself as Jacob.

jubileetrain · 05/06/2022 17:25

Maybe. I have a cousin called Jacob who goes by Jack, a neighbour who is just Jacob and s FB friend from school who is now Jake.

Amdone123 · 05/06/2022 17:28

Not necessarily.
I taught Jacobs and Jakes : I never heard Jacob shortened to Jake : they're different names to me.
However, when he's older / teenage years, it may get shortened by either himself or his peers.

Amdone123 · 05/06/2022 17:28

I love Jacob BTW.
Dislike Jake.

Notanotherwindow · 05/06/2022 17:30

Probably once he goes to school, yes.

Joel will likely be shortened to Joe and Jasper may be shortened to Jaz. Only known one Sebastian but although its a lovely name he was always Bas to his friends and I really hate that nickname.

I think if you really don't like the shortening, don't use it. I love the name Rowan but it will end up Ro and it makes my teeth clench I hate it so much so I wouldn't use it.

LisaSimpson77 · 05/06/2022 17:32

I know a Jacob and he's 11 now (year 6) and has never been Jake.
You won't have any control over it though if that's what he wants to call himself.

RuthW · 05/06/2022 17:41

The one I know is called Jake

olympicsrock · 05/06/2022 17:43

The Jacob us know is Jay for short

atomicnotsoblonde · 05/06/2022 17:45

Mine is a jay

Jacobsmother · 05/06/2022 17:46

My son is Jacob but he prefers Jake so that’s what he is now

doesn’t matter what you prefer because he’ll change it if that what he wants!

IsSpringSprangedYet · 05/06/2022 17:47

My nephew is a Jacob, and we never shorten it. I think Jake is a whole other name. Our Reuben was nearly Oliver, which I guess would have been Ollie.

AiryFairy1 · 05/06/2022 17:49

I fully intended to call my DS the nickname of his full name - think Mikey for Michael - but since he was born he's always been the full name and in fact he now corrects anyone who calls him any other version, so I would also say your DC won't necessarily be Jake!

getmeavodka · 05/06/2022 17:53

My son is 21 year old Jacob and has never been called Jake by anyone. I think it helped that my mum's cat was Jake so if anyone tried to shorten it my son immediately corrected them!

meow1989 · 05/06/2022 17:54

My ds isn't a Jacob but has a similarly able to be shorted name, so judging by my experience (ie, what I call him) it could be anything from jacob/jake to Jay, jay Jay, Jakey... Blush

illbeinthegarden · 05/06/2022 18:00

I have a Jacob he's a grown adult now and has never been called Jake!

catchingzzzeds · 05/06/2022 18:02

I have a 10 year old Jacob and his friends and our family use Jacob or Jay. I've never heard anyone call him Jake.

longtompot · 05/06/2022 18:06

My ds is a Jacob and it has been shortened to Jake when at primary school, but he prefers Jacob and asks everyone call him that.

Truffled · 05/06/2022 18:09

My (almost) adult son is still called Jacob by all his friends.

Justwingingit2005 · 05/06/2022 18:13

My son is a Jake.
Hes been asked a few times if it's short for Jacob, he says no I'm just a Jake.
