Will Jacob get called Jake?

Love the name Jacob, we just really don’t like Jake. I think it has a bit of a 90s feel to it and there were lots of Jakes in my year at school.

Will people automatically call Jacob, Jake?

DS1 is Reuben. Any other suggestions also welcome. So far we like Jacob, Joel, Jasper, Sebastian.

We know a Jacob - family all call him Jacob. At school everyone calls him Jake!

Thanks everyone, a real mix of replies! Still love the name so might go for it but have to accept whatever he decides to call himself/his friends call him

I think either way he'll go with what he prefers but if you only call him Jacob then he'll never know any different!

I've got an Oliver and I thought I would call him Olly because I preferred it, but as soon as he was born it was Oliver only! I didn't see him as Olly at all, it's strange how opinions can change when they're here!

I think Jay is a more obvious shortening of Jacob. But Jacob is a short name and I dont think it's inevitable it will be shortened - whereas in my experience Sebastien is always Seb (which I really like).

I know brothers called Reuben and Jonah, which I thought sounded nice.

pinklavenders · 06/06/2022 07:58

Most Jakes I know are actually Jacobs, so it does often seem to get shortened.

I know brothers Reuben and Quentin and think they go well together!

Trinacham · 06/06/2022 08:01

Yes, my Nephew gets shortened to Jake

bigbootyjulie · 06/06/2022 10:41

Maybe, but I don't think it's a guarantee. I knew a Jacob at school and I can't recall anyone calling him Jake. It's a fairly short name, unlike e.g. Maximilian, which is almost always shortened to Max in my experience.

spiderlight · 06/06/2022 14:02

I know two Jacobs. One is always just known as Jacob and the other as Jack.

YerAWizardHarry · 06/06/2022 14:04

I have a Jacob and a Jake in my class, never really think of them as being “related” names to be honest! Jacob’s name is never shortened

Frida9 · 06/06/2022 16:19

If you like Jacob then you'll have to pointedly tell teachers at nursery/school that it's Jacob, not Jake.
I have a name which is always shortened, I can't remember a time when anyone's called me my actual name. For arguments sake say I'm Rebecca but always called Becky, Becca, Bex. You can't control what nicknames your child gets. If you have a Matthew he will be Matt, if you have a Benjamin he will be Ben.
If you really don't like Jake then don't call your son Jacob.

onelittlefrog · 06/06/2022 16:25

It's 50/50 really.

Jake is a shortened form of Jacob, so if you choose Jacob then there is always going to be a chance that either he will like Jake and choose it for himself, or other people may call him it as a nickname.

You can't really control that when he's older, so you'd have to accept the possibility if you choose the name.

My friend's son is called Jacob. I've never heard anyone call him Jake but I don't know his mates so they might do.

BlackandJello · 06/06/2022 16:32

13 year old DS is Jacob. I also had the same worries about the name Jake but nobody has ever called him that. He is always Jacob.

StageRage · 06/06/2022 16:39

I know 2 teen / 20s Jacobs, neither are ever called Jake.

One is sometimes ‘J’, but at his own instigation, and he is still mostly Jacob.

I have a name with a common short version: I don’t use it, so no one else does.

lazysummer · 07/06/2022 23:30

I have a 28 year old Jacob. He’s never been Jake- he has never encouraged it and we all prefer Jacob. I know another Jacob- also never shortened to Jake. I agree they are like different names.

Fml2015 · 07/06/2022 23:36

My nephew is Jacob. We sometimes call him Jackey but only since his younger cousin 3 calls it him.

His younger brother is also Rueben. Beautiful names :)

Ewisa · 08/06/2022 12:32

My neighbour has a son called Jacob and she calls him Jake:-)

soulinablackberrypie · 10/06/2022 08:35

At first he will get called whatever you tell people he is called, including at school. In my experience boys tend to start spontaneously shortening their own and each other's names when they're around 10, so if that happens and he's happy with it, I think it's only fair to let him use whatever version he likes. So don't choose this name if it would be an absolute deal breaker for you to hear it shortened even if he wants it that way.
