Ari - Baby boy name?

Umpalumpa2 · 27/05/2022 04:04

I am currently 36 weeks pregnant to a baby boy, our DC1.

Both DP and I like name Ari, pronounced as Harry with a dropped H.

We are not from the UK and it would be short of a longer name.

How do you find it? Would it go down well in the UK?

Would people assume it’s a girls name?

And would the Harry association create a big problem for him?

Thanks all!

It's definitely a boy name. It's the name of a boy whose Bar Mitzvah I recently attended. Never met a girl with this name.

Jeansgoals · 27/05/2022 04:42

You know what I mean

jackstini · 27/05/2022 04:43

What's the longer name?

I know 2 girl Aris - Ariana and Ariadne

Not sure what the long boys' name is but I do like it

mathanxiety · 27/05/2022 04:47

There isn't a long boy name. Ari isn't an abbreviation. It's a Hebrew name meaning lion.

It also means eagle in some Scandinavian languages.

ElenaSt · 27/05/2022 04:48

Aristotle?

Love it.

mathanxiety · 27/05/2022 04:55

It's not a short version of another name.

It's a complete name in itself.

jackstini · 27/05/2022 04:56

Yes Aristotle - love it!

GrumpyPanda · 27/05/2022 05:05

I would have thought Ariel.

Snowiscold · 27/05/2022 07:17

Well known Jewish/Hebrew male name. It is not short for anything. People may mishear Harry, though, sometimes.

ChagSameachDoreen · 27/05/2022 07:19

I love Ari. I'm Jewish and I know a lot of boys and men with this name.

pinklavenders · 27/05/2022 07:26

Definitely a boys name. I'd assume short for Aristotle.

TranquilAirOfMorning · 27/05/2022 07:29

It's a very "airy" name

Tryagain2020 · 27/05/2022 07:43

I come from a part of the uk where H is often dropped, so I'd assume you said Harry unless you wrote it down.

peaceinourtime · 27/05/2022 07:46

Its a Jew/Hebrew name, pronounced Ari not Harry with the H dropped-arry.

That sounds exactly the same in my accent

welshpolarbear · 27/05/2022 08:07

Love it. There was a boy in school with me who was called Ari. Possibly short for Arwel as we are in Wales but was only ever Ari.

AtillatheHun · 27/05/2022 08:21

It’s a brilliant name but pronounced Ah-ri not ‘arry

tiredanddangerous · 27/05/2022 08:22

People drop their h's where I'm from so I'd assume Harry.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 27/05/2022 08:39

I'm also Jewish and know a lot of Aris. Just call him Harry/Hari if you want the Arry pronunciation.

Agree with this. I once knew someone called Ellen. Her mum spoke about her and called her Ellen. I called her Ellen to her face. Turns out, her name is Helen...

I do love Ari though. It's lovely.

Holly60 · 27/05/2022 09:00

Yes I believe it's Ah-ri, which is much nicer in my opinion.

beetree1 · 27/05/2022 09:56

I love the name Ari but would pronounce it Areeee not like Harry without the H.

TheGirlWhoLived · 27/05/2022 10:00

Ari is lovely, I know two boys with this name, one named after the angel Ariel and one Aristocrates! I personally feel Aristocrates is a bit much but whatever floats your boat

Umpalumpa2 · 27/05/2022 10:21

Thank you all.

The way we want it pronounced is ‘Arry like Harry without the H. It is a stand-alone name in our home country and is pronounced this way.

Wont the British instinctively pronounce it this way?

What is the other pronounciation that many of you mentioned? Is it Ar-REE with emphasis at the “REE” instead of the “Ar”?

Is this more common pronounciation for the name Ari?
