Horatia or Harriet?

I think Horatia is dashing, Harriet is pretty. I prefer Horatia but it's a bit of a brave choice.

Harriet is beautiful. Horatia is hideous.

DramaAlpaca · 22/05/2022 20:41

What @AllPlayedOut said ^^

stairgates · 22/05/2022 20:42

Harriet

Yes to this

RishiRich · 22/05/2022 20:42

Really?! I imagine her to be the kind of woman who owns the name and runs the board.

There's nothing...at all...remotely 'dashing' about Horatia...it's awful.

Harriet is lovely.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/05/2022 20:43

Harriet.

Smartiepants79 · 22/05/2022 20:44

Harriet.
Horatia will just be constantly coming out as Horatio, which is a boys name. Horrible please don’t. Does her name need to be ‘dashing’?

Yes...in stark, beige tweed and hideous horn rimmed spectacles, with a shrill upper class voice and flat brogues.

StageRage · 22/05/2022 20:46

Harriet.

It’s strong, not pretty, IMO.

But no child’s character or achievements will be determined by their name.

AllPlayedOut · 22/05/2022 20:47

I just picture Miss Trunchbull(I know that her name was Agatha.)

Mischance · 22/05/2022 20:47

Horatia is a horror!

Isitcake · 22/05/2022 20:47

Horatia starts with whore. Not going to be fun growing up!

NotCrossBun · 22/05/2022 20:49

Never met a Horatia. I would imagine her like Perpetua in Bridget Jones. Nothing intrinsically wrong with that, but I guess it depends what circles you move in. A state schooled Horatia could be in for a rough ride.

toastofthetown · 22/05/2022 20:50

Harriet. And I'm not a big fan of Harriet.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/05/2022 20:50

I wonder if "dashing" comes from the Horatia in one of Georgette Heyer's books? She was called after her godfather Horace Walpole I think. Even she didn't like her name.

Jeelypieces20storeys · 22/05/2022 20:54

Horatia is not brave ..or dashing ..or even nice. It's awful. Introduce yourself as Horatia for a week before inflicting it on an innocent baby.

Harriet is lovely.

JuneWind · 22/05/2022 21:00

As pp mentioned, Horatia having the ‘whore’ sound would be a big no-no for me.

Mysisterlivesinbicester · 22/05/2022 21:02

Go away, all of you. You know not of what you speak. I have a Horatia, and it is a beautiful, fabulous name for a beautiful, fabulous young woman who is very decidedly not tweedy or brogue-wearing.

Harriet is a nice name, too, but Horatia is better (though I am clearly biased).

Mysisterlivesinbicester · 22/05/2022 21:03

BTW there is nothing "whore" about Horatia, if you are pronouncing it correctly. Otherwise, you'd say the same about boys called Horatio/Horace.

ofwarren · 22/05/2022 21:08

Horatia is dreadful
Harriet is much nicer

Mysisterlivesinbicester · 22/05/2022 21:11

@ofwarren You have no taste. Along with pretty much everyone else on this thread. I will defend Horatias to the hilt.

Badqueen · 22/05/2022 21:14

Why not change your own name to horatia?

SpaceJamtart · 22/05/2022 21:21

Harriet, ts a nice name that is easy to spell and say and hadls easy diminutives. I know three Harriets and they all suit their name, one is a Nurse prac, one is a ceramic artist and one who is 12, goes by Hattie and wants to be a vet.
Its a good name.

Deadringer · 22/05/2022 21:29

I simply cannot imagine looking at a tiny, gorgeous, squidgy, baby girl and saying lets call her Horatia. But hey, different strokes and all that.
