Looking to honour a family member and use this name or a name relating to this for the baby girl. Any ideas? I know it's not the most popular name ever! Happy to change it a bit to make it softer but not sure how.

This might not be too helpful, but in general if you are honouring someone your should just use their actual name. I mean, Jill is a form of Jillian, which is a medieval variant on Julian, so you could twist it so that Juliet is an honour name, but if I were Jill, then I wouldn’t really feel the name was after me.

I’d stick Jill in as a middle name and talk to your child about the Jill they were named after. The middle names I’ve picked for my children wouldn’t be my first choice based on the names alone, but I love them for their meaning to my family.

Well I love Jill on it’s own as a first name. Pretty, not too popular, and nice and simple. Jillian would also be nice.

ElenaSt · 18/05/2022 21:38

Jill is a lovely name.

JaneJeffer · 18/05/2022 21:39

I like it because it reminds me of

Jill
LaLaLouella · 18/05/2022 21:42

I think it's a rather forgettable name

Jillian is quite nice though - gives it a bit more oomph!

HSKAT · 18/05/2022 21:42

Latin name for Jill is Juliana

Movelikewater · 18/05/2022 21:45

i love jilene - with more of a sh sound than a hard j. I’m not sure it’s a real name, but love it.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/05/2022 22:47

Jill or especially Jillian as a middle name would be lovely in a pretty, softly retro style imo. I wouldn't use it as a first name only because of the hassle - as I think it will be assumed to be spelt with G (if you live in the UK at least).

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/05/2022 23:03

Jillian / Gillian is OK as a middle name. I wouldn't use it as a first name, it's a bit drab.

peaceinourtime · 19/05/2022 00:35

Jill is nice on its own. If you want to use Jillian use the J spelling not with a G. I have known several Jillian's under 30 who use their full name. Juliana is nice too.

SAB10 · 19/05/2022 00:43

I love Jill as a standalone name - the only Jill I know is one of my best friends, hilarious, incredibly cool and beautiful! So I'm probably biased haha

I agree with this 100%. If you want to honour a Jill you need to use the name Jill. I’ve seen loads of really ridiculous ones on here, people ‘honouring’ a Barbara with the name Daisy and other stupid things. If you’re going to do it you just need to do it.

For what it’s worth, Jill/Jillian is a fine middle name.

Aquamarine1029 · 19/05/2022 00:57

I have always loved Jill, and I think Jillian is beautiful. I've known four Jill's/Jillian's, of wildly differing age brackets, and they were all gorgeous and lovely.

DietCoke99 · 19/05/2022 01:43

Jill is lovely but too short by itself. So definitely go with one of the names suggested above

UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 19/05/2022 08:47

Go for Jill - it’s a lovely name

Bongbangbing · 19/05/2022 09:19

Thanks everyone! Much more positive towards the name than I expected. The original Jill goes by both Jill and Jillian so that gives me options whilst also remaining actually relevant to the original person.

I quite like Jillian actually, though I prefer Gillian spelling. It has a similar feel to Judith to me which I also quite like.

I wouldn't go with just Jill as the full name though, it looks incomplete.

FayCarew · 19/05/2022 09:50

I don't like Jillian at all but Jill is lovely

AlmondyCookie · 19/05/2022 11:32

Both Jill and Jillian are lovely.

AmbushedByCake · 19/05/2022 11:38

My favourite books as a child were the Jill pony stories. She was a great character and I have residual fondness for the name as a result.

Stellamar · 19/05/2022 11:41

It was a very popular name for kids born in the 80s, like Laura, Katie, Sarah, Julie etc. So I'm afraid to me it sounds a bit dated and plain .

Juliet is lovely, but I kind of agree that if the important thing is to honour Jill then it should be Jill.

I don't think there were many Julies or Jills born in the 80's. 60's yes, 70's at a push.
OP it's a pretty name spelt with a J, not as harsh looking as with a G IMO.

Classica · 19/05/2022 11:45

I think it's quite a pretty name in a plain no-nonsense way.

I agree that if you're honouring a much loved Jill to use the name itself rather than something vaguely related to it. Jill or Jillian would make fine middle names if you're not overly keen on it as a first name.

JenniferBarkley · 19/05/2022 11:47

My name is the longer version with the G, I have to say I'd be surprised to meet a baby one! I like having the longer version, although most of my family and friends call me the shorter one.

I do like that it's not a frilly name.

MassiveSalad22 · 19/05/2022 12:00

I love Jillian! Fresh and punchy. Reminds me of the couple of little Alisons I met in the states. I’m team Jill!
