Family strongly dislike baby name

Im 30 weeks pregnant with my seccond, its a boy again, which my family made it very ovious they wanted a girl and was disapointed when i revealed its a boy.

After weeks and weeks of discussing names with my partner we finally settled on Reggie a couple of weeks ago, kept it to ourselves untill we knew it would stick and now its stuck we have been telling family.

Very few family actually like the name and my family have been very strongly against it. Saying its a drug gang name, i cant name my child that. Then going on to suggest other names. I firmly tell them no Reggie is what we have settled on and that will be his name. To which i get the response you will change your mind when you see him so what about this name.

Its really upsetting me and im due to go to a siblings birthday party tomorow and i really dont want to go as i know the topic of names will be brought up.

They're right, it is bloody awful.
But you should never tell anyone tour baby name until the baby is actually born!

You and dh like the name, it's not like you are calling him Gary.

Personally I prefer Gary to Reginald/Reggie... but that shouldn't matter. YOU have got be happy with your choice!

I think Reggie is fine for a child but would he be taken seriously as an adult introducing himself as Reggie, it just seems twee and childlike.

The kind of people who express disappointment at the sex of the baby are unsurprisingly also going to give you their opinion on the name. But you’ve told them so nothing to do but tell them not to be so rude. They should shut up when the child is born.

I'm not fan of idea of not telling my family baby names before baby is born, because nasty comments behind your back do exist and can hurt you if you found out later. And they would still be honest about baby name.
That said, Reggie is perfectly fine choice. I would tell my family their comments about name hurt me, if they care about you, they might stop and rethink. Or just do blanked ban on mentioning anything baby names. They shouldn't care so much, name is fine and just not perfect. And it doesn't matter that it isn't perfect.

It is a gangster name and Reginald is the ‘proper’ name but if you like reggae and being associated with violent crime lords then go for it.

Reggae would be more positive but reggie

My 1 year old is called Reggie. We've had a lot of compliments on his name. After reading this thread... Maybe people have been being polite 😂but I love his name and it really suits him. Fuck um and their opinions x

When you say they were disappointed it was a boy...what do you mean? How did they show their disappointment?

And as some other posters have said number one rule IMO re: baby names is - never divulge a potential name to anyone prior to baby being born. I'm sorry this doesn't help much as you've already done this...but for future babies!!

Now what you need to do is move on...name your baby whatever you want!! And people will get over it whether they like it or not.

Listen... we lost twins at 19 weeks gestation in 2019. A boy and girl. I told my mum we'd given them names after they were delivered as we hadn't yet decided on names beforehand. When I told my mum what we'd chosen to name our daughter, she said "Oh I love that, it's a beautiful name" then I told her our son's name and she said instantly "I don't like that name". I was very taken aback by it. Our son and daughter had died - I honestly didn't give a shit whether others approved of their names or not. It's hurtful that my mum said that about her own grandchildren name when we were grieving.

We have a two year old daughter now (a surviving twin). We didn't tell anyone our plans for their names either until after they were born. Nobody has expressed any opinion on our daughter's name or that of her twin brother.

I'm now 24 weeks pregnant with another little boy. We're 99% sure we've chosen a name for him that we both love. Again, we've agrees not to tell a soul the name we're considering as we seriously cannot be arsed with others casting judgement or giving us their opinions. He's our baby and we've picked a name we both like and one we believe 'works' with our daughter's name. There's nothing worse than people asking what you plan to call your baby then saying "Oh don't call him/her that! It's chavvy or related to X or reminds me of this little brat at school" blah blah. WHATEVER name you pick, somebody will always tell you it was a bad choice for their own personal reasons. It's not their baby so therefore not their choice!

If you like Reggie, then Reggie it is!

my MIL (whom I like and respect very much and who was kind enough to care for our daughter whilst our son was being born) told my mum when she phoned to ask that he was born but we had named him something “very strange” 🤣
it’s a lively, classic, Scottish (ancestry so not random) name. He’s still the only one we know and everyone else have told us they live it.
MIL is German which may influence her views. But, again: ignore, ignore, ignore 🤣

As in if someone tells you their baby name you go on about how you don’t like it?

The OP hasn’t asked us what we think of the name, just about how she is feeling about her family’s reaction, going in at her about it.

Arty, creative, hipstery types? I've only seen it used by people who like 'ard names like Kane, Rocky and Mason. I think they like the Ronnie/Reggie/gangster association.

@synchorswim I can confirm I'm neither of those types. I didn't even realise Reggie was a "gangster" type.... Maybe I'm not old enough for that 😬
