Ee

purplemunkey · 02/05/2022 19:32

I’ve only ever heard Am-ee-lia in UK

Bathroom2022 · 02/05/2022 19:32

Definitely only number 1.

WhoppingBigBackside · 02/05/2022 19:33

Am-eel-ya

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 02/05/2022 19:34

Am-ee-lya.
I would expect the second pronunciation to be spelt Amalia.

toastofthetown · 02/05/2022 19:38

I've only heard the first pronunciation in the UK. Behind the Name gives a-MEH-lya as a Spanish and Italian pronunciation, but not British.

addler · 02/05/2022 19:47

I've only heard Ah-mee-lia and Ah-meal-ya (which I don't like)

Ah meeee lia

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 02/05/2022 21:13

eeee sound, but it sounds like uh MEALY uh, which is awful. It has an awful medical meaning too, so I really wouldn't OP.

queenofmay · 02/05/2022 21:14

Definitely (1).

I've only heard (2) in Continental Europe. The vast majority of Brits wouldn't know about that pronunciation or use it.

womaninatightspot · 02/05/2022 21:15

The first but I know a Bulgarian family in the UK and their daughter is no2

I have managed to reach my late 40s without knowing that Amelia has a medical meaning. I have literally never heard it used in a medical context and I imagine most other people (in the UK at least) haven't either, so really wouldn't avoid the name for that reason.

SoggyPaper · 02/05/2022 21:26

I keep hearing people dragging out all the syllables in it. Ah-mee-lee-ah.

I genuinely cannot understand the popularity of the name. It’s fussy, frilly, multisyllabic, doesn’t have a very nice sound…

I just see no upside with it. I think it might be my least favourite name in the world.

JamMakingWannaBe · 02/05/2022 22:28

Maybe Amelie has the eh sound in your 2nd example?

Amelia=absence of limbs. The fact that you haven't heard of this doesn't mean it's wise you suggest OP disregards any such concern. It's even worse than children lumbered with the name Candida.
