Hello,

How is the name Sophia pronounced?

I have only heard it as Sof - ee - a, with the stress at the "ee".

Is it pronounced as Sof - eye - a in the UK?

It can be said both ways Where I am SE its more commonly done Sof ee a

BooksAndHooks · 28/04/2022 11:59

Never heard it pronounced soph eye a. Although it’s soph ee a it usually is more soph ear

MinoucheSapphic · 28/04/2022 12:04

I'd say it's pronounced so-FEE-a the vast majority of the time. Like Sophia Loren. Though maybe it depends on your region and what circled you run in. The only Sophia I've heard of who uses the "eye" pronunciation is Sophia Myles.

Alarae · 28/04/2022 12:11

Basically like Sophie-ah fe (so Sof-EE-ah).

DropYourSword · 28/04/2022 12:11

Never heard it pronounced with an "eye" sound.

I know a Soh-fee-ah and a sofee-ah. I think the first pronunciation is way more common (as in, frequent!)

nearlyspringyay · 28/04/2022 12:15

I have never heard Soph eye a, and there are Sophias everywhere around here

Beachsidesunset · 28/04/2022 12:18

Isn't So-fy-a the French pronunciation?

Ruibies · 28/04/2022 12:29

I've only met one who went by So-fye-a and it was more like S'fy-a like a very short first syllable.
I also once met a SO-feah. So emphasis on first syllable and the last bit rhyming with Leah, rather than a drawn out lee-ah if that makes sense. Hard to type out haha.

Everyone else I have only known as So-fee-ah.

artisanbread · 28/04/2022 12:30

It used to be pronounced Sof-eye-ah in Victorian times I think but now it is almost invariably So-fee-ah.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 28/04/2022 12:35

Yeah, I associate the eye-a pronunciation with Georgian and Victorian ladies. Sounds a bit antiquated to me.

Pemba · 28/04/2022 12:48

Yes the traditional British pronunciation was sof-EYE-a I believe, but nowadays the continental sof-EEE-a has overtaken it in popularity.

In a similar way, Maria used to be said Ma-RYE-a rather than Ma-REE-a . Like Mariah Carey but without the 'h'. There used to be a type of police van known as a 'black Maria' (Ma-RYE-a).

This is how those names were said in the UK and I think the USA in Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian times. When they become popular again in recent decades they were taken from Europe and so pronounced the more usual mainland European way.

Viviennemary · 28/04/2022 12:50

Usually pronounced in UK. Sew fee ah. But i expect it's one of those that can be pronounced differently.

SemperIdem · 28/04/2022 14:00

I’ve never heard it pronounced So-fye-ah in real life except for Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, which was named when that (Germanic) pronunciation was the standard and has continued.

So-fee-ah is very much the standard (Mediterranean) pronunciation now.

KirstenBlest · 28/04/2022 14:18

I was Soff-eye-ah until fairly recently (20th century) in the UK, but is now is usually Soff-ee-a. It can also be Soff-ya

Geranium1984 · 28/04/2022 14:25

We have a friend who pronounces it as Sof 'eye' ah but that's the only person I've ever come across who does. I'm not sure how you're supposed to know!
I would always look at the name and assume Sof eee ah

Chaoslatte · 28/04/2022 14:28

So-fee-uh. Literally never heard of the eye pronunciation before!

Kat1953 · 28/04/2022 14:35

Usually Sof-ee-ah

But I know a couple of people who are called So-fEye-ah, they're both very upper class (and one in 30s, one in 20s)

Electrox · 28/04/2022 15:18

Soph-EYE-ah sounds right to me.

IStandWithMaya · 28/04/2022 15:25

Eee sounds more natural to me

dementedpixie · 28/04/2022 15:30

So-fee-ah

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 28/04/2022 15:34

My DD is Sofia and we regularly have this conversation as even we don't know ha ha. We say Suh-fee-ah

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 28/04/2022 15:35

When I lived in London some pronounced it Sof-eye-ah

VeryQuaintIrene · 28/04/2022 15:36

I'm a Sophia ('64 vintage) and my mum always pronounced it Soph-eye-a

surreymum89 · 28/04/2022 15:41

I have a Sophia (So-fee-uh) she's in her teens never had anybody pronounce her name any other way than that.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 28/04/2022 15:44

VeryQuaintIrene · 28/04/2022 15:36

I'm a Sophia ('64 vintage) and my mum always pronounced it Soph-eye-a

Do you pronounce it that way yourself?
