Hello,

How is the name Sophia pronounced?

I have only heard it as Sof - ee - a, with the stress at the "ee".

Is it pronounced as Sof - eye - a in the UK?

I go by Sophie :)

mathanxiety · 28/04/2022 15:52

The 'eye' pronunciation was used in Victorian times and earlier. Maria was pronounced Mariah back then too.

Sally872 · 28/04/2022 15:55

Sof-ee-a is more common but Sof-eye-ah nice too and not unheard off.

Is this a name you are considering? If so both nice choices. You will have people assume the more common way so that might be annoying initially. But if you prefer sof-eye-a then worth it.

I love the so-fye-a pronunciation and would have used the name if I could guarantee it, but it’s virtually dead.

The actress Sophia Myles is a fye rather than a fee.

CaffiSaliMali · 29/04/2022 09:12

So fee ah is more common in the UK now.

As PP have said, Maria and Sophia used to be Mar-eye-ah and So-fye-ah historically in the UK. My grandparents in their 80s still use those pronunciations.

EdgeOfACoin · 29/04/2022 12:32

I know a sof-eye-a. I much prefer that pronunciation to Sof-ee-a. However, I think the 'ee' pronunciation is standard now.

I also far prefer Mar-eye-a to Mar-ee-a.

Lylakate · 29/04/2022 22:52

I have never heard of “sof-eye-ah”. It’s pronounced “so-fee-ah” or “su-fee-ah” in the UK.

Pemba · 29/04/2022 23:49

'Sof-eye-a' is a thing though Lylakate as several pps have explained. Are you saying we're making it up, or what?

I have never heard of “sof-eye-ah”. It’s pronounced “so-fee-ah” or “su-fee-ah” in the UK.

Do you apply that ridiculous logic to everything in your life?

British Baby Names has an excellent and detailed history of the name, the relevant paragraph being:

”From the 18th century onward, Sophia was traditionally pronounced sə-FĪ-ə in Britain, rhyming with Mariah (as in Mariah Carey). Sophy was used as the typical short-form.

This has, in recent decades, been largely replaced by the European pronunciation sə-FEE-ə (perhaps promoted by the fame of actress Sophia Loren, whose birth name was Sofia Scicolone) though the traditional British pronunciation does survive in small pockets. Actress Sophia Myles has her name pronounced sə-FĪ-ə, for example.

Even E.G. Withycombe was still listing Sophia as being pronounced sə-FĪ-ə in the third edition of The Oxford Dictionary of English Christian Names in 1977.”

I've heard it pronounced both ways and get very confused and can't remember who is pronounced which way! The same with Mee-ah and My-ah!

Zoya hits the nail on the head.

Abraxan · 30/04/2022 09:56

Have taught a number of children names `Sophia. Only ever known them to use the pronunciation:

Sof-ee-ah

Abraxan · 30/04/2022 09:57

Actually, possibly more

Soh-fee-ah

with more emphasis on the middle syllable than the first

tuliplover · 30/04/2022 15:01

Sof ee a. If it was ever pronounced Sof eye a I'd spell it Sofia.

Luredbyapomegranate · 01/05/2022 10:06

Traditionally it was So-Fye-Ah in the UK, but the more international So-Fee-Ah has really taken over.

if you want the former it will be a nightmare as the name is so popular, so I’d find something else - Serena, Susannah, Sabrina, Safina, Seraphina, Sanchia might be alternatives

Soh-fire in a Jane Austen novel

Soh-fee-uh today
