Caspian with the nickname Ian? Maybe McCoy or Altair as a middle name?

An alternative might be Jasper.... in my head they're kind of similar.

delshell · 26/04/2022 07:03

It's a bit too Narnia for me. I'd avoid it for the same reason I'd avoid Hermione and the association with Harry Potter. Both nice names but for me the link is too strong - and I'm speaking as someone who loves both Narnia and HP!

Elysant · 26/04/2022 08:09

I love Caspian, it's so unusual, but feels cozy and familiar and not obtrusive
I love Cass as nickname, but for you maybe Sappy or Pian from -aspian part of the name

KirstenBlest · 26/04/2022 11:47

Caspian and Ian are both 2-syllables, so why would you shorten.

Couldn't you use Caspian and use a nn like Spike instead, seeing as you don't want to use Cass

fancyfrogs · 26/04/2022 11:50

Ian is awful please don't give your baby that nickname.
There is a kebab shop near me called caspians. So it makes me think of that and therefore dislike. Sorry!

Elysant · 26/04/2022 11:51

Oh, Caspian nn Spike is so sweet!

KirstenBlest · 26/04/2022 11:53

My thinking was the S,P, and CK sound

Chaoslatte · 26/04/2022 11:58

Narnia connection makes it too twee imo, and Ian is awful. People would definitely shorten it to Cass so pick another name if you don’t want that.

midsomermurderess · 26/04/2022 12:16

Why does every name here need a nickname. It’s 2 syllables. How difficult is that? Anyway, I quite like it.

midsomermurderess · 26/04/2022 12:16

Well, 3.

Yeah or maybe Jackson would be a cute nickname. My thinking was that Caspian has s,n,a & c and so does Jackson. Or maybe Nick? Almost all the letters of Nick are in Caspian.

Honestly, if you like the name Caspian use the name Caspian. Don’t use it then try to wrangle Spike/Ian/Tommy out if it.

But you'd wrangle Jacjson or Nick. Confused FFS

I have a friend called Spike, but his real name is something quite different.

Spike Milligan was called Terence

Surelyitscoffeetime · 26/04/2022 16:21

I think of the sea. Also a bit pretentious. Sorry.

muddyford · 26/04/2022 16:30

All I can think of is Narnia.

MajorCarolDanvers · 26/04/2022 16:32

I like Ian

None of the rest - far too fussy and pretentious. Sorry

Billandben444 · 26/04/2022 16:48

Caspian is three syllables! Nicknames just happen and you certainly can't tell people 'Oh, his name's Caspian but we call him Ian'. Probably get called Pee-Pee 😛

KirstenBlest · 26/04/2022 16:58

It's two syllables in my accent
Casp-yun
just like William is Will-yum

LollyLol · 26/04/2022 17:08

Ian isnt a natural nn of Caspian as the emphasis is heavily on the first syllable. Similar to Maximilian or Finnian or a whole load of “-Ian” names.

if you like Ian, just call him Ian! No one will bat an eyelid. Whereas Caspian abbreviated to Ian is odd.

Of course I wouldn’t wrangle Jackson or Nick. I was being sarcastic to point out the silliness of suggesting that any two names sharing some letters are interchangeable.

Yes Spike Milligan was called Terrence, but I doubt anyone thinks Spike is short for Terrence - his parents didn’t choose Terrence because they loved the name Spike.

How clever and innovative of you. I am withered to the very heart. My goodness, if only your one liners were equal to your fantastic ability to shorten names to totally different names.

KirstenBlest · 26/04/2022 23:17

When I was at school, nn were usually based on the stresses syllable of the first name or surname, or something that rhymed, or taken from letters of the name, or from something loosely associated with the name.

A Caspian Brambles would end up being nicknamed Cas or Jelly (bramble jelly) or Wilf (Wilfred Brambles) or Thorny or something

@Kanaloa glad you appreciate my brilliance

Is that 😯 sarcasm?

Greyisgood · 27/04/2022 00:04

There's a large chain of low budget kebab/pizza take aways in the Midlands called Caspian Pizza. Worth noting if you live in that area.
