Do you like the name August for a boy? Do you think the name is better or worse if the boy is born in August? Can you envisage any teasing?

I think it's ugly sorry. Also more of a girls name than a boys name.

And yes definitely more chance of teasing if he was actually born in August.

RainCheckMate · 17/04/2022 18:54

@rahjama it is not true that it's more of a girl's name. Aside from the fact that it's very popular in Scandinavia for boys and not used for girls, it's currently ranked 155th in the US for boys and 856th for girls, and 579th in the UK for boys (62 born in 2020) and 2163rd for girls (12 born in 2020).

Probably more popular now, due to Princess Eugenie’s baby son being named August.

rahjama · 17/04/2022 18:59

Sorry - what I meant by that was that I view it was more of a girls name than boys. When I read your title I assumed it was for a girl and then had a moment of surprise when I read "for a boy". When I hear the name I think of it as a girls name - that's all I meant. I don't know anyone (girl or boy) with that name though.

I like it, like in the book Wonder the main character is called August and nicknamed Auggie. It's cute

Suzi9989 · 17/04/2022 19:03

Love the name! Also love Arlo and Otis! We had top three ready before little one was born

southern15029048683 · 17/04/2022 19:08

I love it

ScarlettSing · 17/04/2022 19:13

I like it.
But I don't like names the same as the birth month.

WhyTheWhales · 17/04/2022 19:40

I love it! I know one who is a teenager. Very artsy family and it suits him really well

Wynnie1990 · 17/04/2022 19:53

I absolutely love the name August! To me, it's a very strong and traditional-sounding name. I know one, and he's very cool!

toastofthetown · 17/04/2022 19:57

I love August. I think it's better if he's born out of August; I probably wouldn't use it for child born in August! I don't envisage teasing, though my view on teasing is that though names can be used to tease children, children aren't teased because of their name. I was at school with some names which MN would have said would condemn them to a life of relentless mockery, but they were popular and confident and did just fine. It does seem very trendy and of the moment though. I can see it dating to this time period somewhat, not that I see that as a problem.

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/04/2022 21:31

It’s nice. Prefer Augustus

Synchrony · 17/04/2022 22:47

I hate all names with a "gus" sound. I'm afraid it makes me think of mucus.

Justkeeppedaling · 17/04/2022 22:49

I prefer Augustus too.

cassrose · 18/04/2022 04:49

I love August. It's my number 1 name for my next baby if it's a boy.

carefullycourageous · 18/04/2022 04:56

Yes I like it. Definitely a boy name.

Why would there be more chance of teasing if he was born in August? That doesn’t make any sense.

I think it’s an ok name. I looked after a lovely little boy named Augustus and he wore it well.

so basically, you show no respect to Swedes, Czechs, and other Europeans where August is traditional male name, while at same time, having absolutely no reason to believe it's female name.
Elysant · 18/04/2022 13:22

I love August for a boy. It's not traditional name where's I'm from, but there was one 18/19 century writer called August who had varied heritage and I associate August with literature and arts from the period.

FayCarew · 18/04/2022 13:49

Augustine or Austin are nicer

People will say it like the month, not as Au Gust

I don't think it's unreasonable to assume it's a girl's name since other 'month' names are usually used for girls - May, April, June, January.

August used as an adjective feels quite masculine, somehow, though - it makes me think of respectable Victorian social reformers with huge muttonchop whiskers. 'The august benefactor of this revered institution, etc etc'

BeKindBeYou · 18/04/2022 16:26

I love it!!

AprilShortbread · 18/04/2022 16:30

Makes me think of the character Gussie Fink-Nottle, newt fancier (though he was an Augustus.)
But not an association many would make.

Changethetoner · 18/04/2022 19:56

Auguste is nicer, the French version of the name. I consider it a masculine name.

RainCheckMate · 19/04/2022 11:21

@Changethetoner what makes that nicer? Wouldn't it just make it more difficult to spell?
