Do you like the name August for a boy? Do you think the name is better or worse if the boy is born in August? Can you envisage any teasing?

I think it's getting a lot more popular due mainly to the recent love for the nn Gus - and if you don't love the more traditional, Scottish ways to get there (Angus, Fergus), August is a natural choice.

I really liked it when I was pregnant but we had a DD. Also the year she was born several people I know (plus a few celebs) had little Guses of some variation, so I'm actually quite relieved.

I think it's a great name though!

Purpleroseas · 19/04/2022 13:08

Auguste is nicer, the French version of the name.

But the op seems to be in an English speaking country Hmm

Purpleroseas · 19/04/2022 13:09

August is lovely. I know a teen August sometimes called Auggie.

IStandWithMaya · 19/04/2022 13:38

I like August. Better than Augustus.

PierresPotato · 19/04/2022 13:39

Yes and persuading many people to say it in a French accent seems a bit unlikely. So what is to be gained by adding the e?

Headabovetheparakeet · 19/04/2022 13:40

I love it. I know an Auggy and think that's a great nn.

WinterWinter2021 · 20/04/2022 09:59

I love August :)

I like August. Better than Augustus.

Definitely :)

LowbrowVictoriana · 20/04/2022 23:31

I love it! Great, strong name, and I've never, ever heard it used for a girl.

However, I really really hate Auggie and Gus as NNs!

beetree1 · 21/04/2022 10:46

Love the name August for a boy, but I personally wouldn't use it if he was born in August

ButterRose · 21/04/2022 13:05

I love it as a name but I personally wouldn't name him that if born in August not because of teasing (I don't think that would be an issue) more because I wouldn't want to name him after his birth month it wouldn't sit right with me

pitterypattery00 · 24/04/2022 22:35

I had never heard the name before Princess Eugenie had her son. It's grown on me - and I like Gus as a nickname. I probably prefer Angus and Fergus, but as a PP said if you aren't wanting a Scottish name then August is a good alternative if you want to have a Gus! Not keen on Auggie nickname at all, sounds really harsh to me but maybe that's just my accent.

I don't think the birth month matters - of the many people we encounter throughout life not many will ever know our birth months, and even fewer will care about whether or not that was the reason behind your name. I've known an Avril, a May and a June. I have no idea when their birthdays are or why they have the name they have. So of you like August just go for it!

catsonahottinroof · 24/04/2022 22:39

I love it - never had a boy so no chance to use it myself - go for it!

catsonahottinroof · 24/04/2022 22:41

I wouldn't mind if he was born in August or not either.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/04/2022 22:48

It's nice but I don't like the potential for people to think I'd copied a minor royal and I can't but help of Augustus Gloop and people breaking into a rendition of Oompah Loompah.

EveSix · 24/04/2022 22:49

Would you pronounce it like the month?
In Scandi countries, it is either OW-gust (first syllable rhymes with 'cow') or AH-gust (first syllable rhymes with 'car' with a silent 'r'.
It is a lovely, strong name.

TheNewUpdateIsShit · 24/04/2022 22:52

I really like it.

Bumble1993 · 26/04/2022 04:17

I love it.

I have a six month old ‘Gus’ of my own and he really suits it. He’s affectionately known as ‘Guzza-wuzza my little bruzza’ by his sister - who hasn’t quite mastered pronunciation!

Although August was on our list we decided to go with Angus for a full name as I really just wanted a a ‘Gus’ and my husband much preferred Angus. He’s never called by his full name as everyone knows him as Gus.

I know this wasn’t at all your question but the ‘Gus’ names are gorgeous and solid and different to your more commonly heard 3 letter NN like Tom, Sam and Dan (which are all great - just more classic)

People probably will ask if he was born in august if you choose August but it’s what folk do - we’re interested. If you don’t mind that then it’s all good. I think even if he was born in august people will only ask and find out once. It’s like Holly’s and Ivy’s being born at Christmas.

Kids are going to tease whatever - both my first and surname were a subject of teasing at school. To be honest the teasing over my name probably saved me from the teasing over my plump frame back then!

Anyway - whatever you choose you’ll love because it’ll be your baby’s name. 😊

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 26/04/2022 10:18

I love August. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has ruined Augustus, I'm afraid.

If you like the nn Gus then Angus is a great name.

BigNoseBaby · 26/04/2022 23:44

I like it

No
Worse
Yes

I think of it as an unremarkable, somewhat old-fashioned name. I don't love it myself but I can certainly see nothing objectionable about it. Though if your inspiration is the historical character I prefer Octavian 😆

I don't think it matters when he's born. Most people who hear his name won't know his birthday and even if they do, so what ? A gazillion Mays were born in May (and in other months) and it's a non issue.
