Thoughts? As a brother for two boys with Irish names. My DH is Irish and said it's not really used in Ireland, is that right? He hasn't lived there for 20 years.

I'd be worried it gets shortened to Tory!

carefullycourageous · 09/04/2022 15:27

I like it.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/04/2022 15:27

I like it. Tor is a good short name.

Avocado22 · 09/04/2022 15:32

Love it- was on my boys list but having a girl. Also had Ivo and Olin if you’re interested…

PhantomErik · 09/04/2022 15:35

The only Torin I know is a little girl, not to say it's not ok for boys but just my contribution.

Cinders15 · 09/04/2022 15:36

Love it
My daughter is now 24 but used to go to nursery with a boy called torin
His brother was Kyle I think

Jacketandbeans · 09/04/2022 16:14

I think it would be Torrie rather than Tory if shortened (short O rather than long) but I doubt we would shorten it.

I'm Irish, living in Ireland, have never heard it before. I do think it sounds nice though.

Zippea · 09/04/2022 16:23

I know a Torrin - it’s never been shortened

SemperIdem · 09/04/2022 16:57

I know a young adult Torin whose older brother has a Irish name. I like it a lot.

LizzieAnt · 09/04/2022 18:05

Your DH is right, it's rarely used in Ireland.

scottishnames · 09/04/2022 18:14

There's no evidence that it's Irish, in spite of what baby name websites say. They are mostly wrong. This website is one of the most reliable www.behindthename.com/name/torin

It's not Norwegian or Swedish (that would be Tor) or Danish (Tor).

It seems to be associated with actors - there was an early 20th cent British actor called Torin Thatcher, and he was named after his father. Perhaps his father's name was a surname or perhaps an English version of one of the Scandinavian names beginning with Thor or Tor.
There was a 19th cent French actor called Joseph Victorin Schiffer, who used the stage name Joseph Torin, a nickname based on his middle name.
I have not come across any uses of it as a personal name before the 19th cent.

It's been up and down in popularity since the 1990s names.darkgreener.com/#tor

I think even if there isn't evidence of its Irishness, it's Irish enough for us. We just want something we like that's in keeping with the other boys names. My DH was just worried it would be perceived as strange in Ireland but I think he's overthinking it!
Glad so many people like it. It gives me Lord of the Rings vibes!

More opinions welcome before I kill my own thread by thanking people!
Our other options are Finn and Malachy.
I find Finn a bit too popular and Malachy a bit harsh sounding but they are still on the list.

Yes it’s nice

I think you are right on both counts

Cathal, Cormac, Ronan, Eoin, Dara, Donal, Fionn (with 2 syllables), Patrick, Seamus, Orin, Lorcan, Myles, Blaise, Ignatius, Dominic, Gabriel, Francis, Michael might all be all be alternatives, but I like Torin.

scrivette · 09/04/2022 20:28

I really like it, it does have a Lord of The Rings vibe. I would like to have a boy called Torin.

livyaz · 09/04/2022 20:45

Lovely name, I've never heard it before, but really like it, for a boy or a girl

IHaveATorin · 09/04/2022 20:49

I’ve got one. He’s nearly 2. I really like the name.

I considered Angus and Lorcan. My husband wanted Tobin. We settled on Torin.

IHaveATorin · 09/04/2022 20:50

On the LoTR vibe, my husbands friends all referred to him as ‘Torin son of DH’ for ages when he was born.

thewreckofthehesperus · 09/04/2022 20:53

Thorin is a Lord of the Rings character and that was the first thing that popped into my head when i heard Torin.

Thorin Oakenshield, King under the mountain. He's the dwarf leader of the company that go back to reclaim the lonely montain from Smaug the dragon.

Ainsley45 · 09/04/2022 21:06

Very good name! I like it very much.

LizzieAnt · 09/04/2022 22:38

"I think even if there isn't evidence of its Irishness, it's Irish enough for us"...??Grin

Apparently, Torfinn is a Norse name...maybe it's derived from that?

I've hardly ever heard Fionn said with two syllables @Luredbyapomegranate. How do you say it?

FluffyPinkSocks · 09/04/2022 22:56

I know an 8 year old Torin (am in Ireland)

Kitkat151 · 09/04/2022 23:01

My DS has a school friend called Torin ( they are 30 now).... he’s been Tozza to all his mates Since he was 8 ....and now his wife to be calls him Tozza as do all his work mates
