Currently discussing our baby girl names and we love Saffie just as a stand alone name. What's everyone's thoughts? We have a Sebastian who also gets nn seb. We both LOVE the name Saffie however my cousins daughter who is now 18 ( we only see very occasionally maybe once a year at a family gathering) is Saffron and get nn saff. I'm hoping it won't really matter as she doesn't get Saffie. Please tell me your thoughts??

I'm not keen on nicknames instead of full names on the birth certificate personally, but it's all the rage these days so you won't stand out.
Personally I'd put Saffira or Saphira on the certificate.
But if the question is about your cousin's daughter and the ressemblance with her name, I wouldn't worry about that. You barely see her and albeit similar the names are not identical.

Our cat is called Saffy. I have never met a human Saffy but it is a pretty name.

RuthW · 06/04/2022 22:03

No. Saffron yes.

nocoolnamesleft · 06/04/2022 22:06

Saffron, yes. Sapphira, yes. Saffy, no.

NuffSaidSam · 06/04/2022 22:06

I know a dog who is called Saffy.

It's a bit too close to Staffie for me.

I'd definitely have it just as a nickname for a 'proper' name.

But I don't think the cousin thing matters.

If your son has a full official name, it would be odd if your DD didn’t have one. She might want a more formal name to use one day.

How about Safira, Sapphire or even Sephora, since Saffron is taken, and just use Saffie as her day to day diminutive?

nickelanddime · 06/04/2022 22:08

Saffy! . Patsy's here . See you later sweetie darling

saritapdot · 06/04/2022 22:09

I think it's quite cute. Potentially your DD could resent having a name like this later, but equally maybe not. It's difficult to say. If you want to err on the safe side, give her a more proper name and use Saffie as the nn. If you're happy with tye risk, Saffie is okay
Maybe everyone will think it's Sophie though?

kitcat15 · 06/04/2022 22:10

I find Saffie such a sad little name after the little girl who was the youngest to die in the Manchester arena bombing 😢

Madrenetterhere · 06/04/2022 22:12

I read saffie and my first thought was of a staffing dog. See what I don't understand is if you both "love it" wtf does it matter what anyone else thinks?! There will always be people who love it, like it, dislike it and hate it no matter the name..just give your child a name you both love. End of.

Madrenetterhere · 06/04/2022 22:13

Auto correct.... meant staffie dog

mrsrobin · 06/04/2022 22:17

Yay! Very nice.

cherryonthecakes · 06/04/2022 22:18

Makes me think of Ab Fab.

Firebird83 · 06/04/2022 22:20

I like it short for Saffia / Safiya

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 06/04/2022 22:25

It sounds like a name for a Staffordshire terrier.

Neverreturntoathread · 06/04/2022 22:29

I like it, although prefer it short for a longer name.

If your cousin called her daughter Saffron then it would be rude to call your daughter Saffron without asking her first, as it is so unusual. It’s ok to use anything thst isn’t Saffron/Saff though.

Safira or Saffia could work.

Bunsie · 06/04/2022 22:29

We have definitely considered the need for a more formal name and use the nn Saffie and I would have gone with Sapphira personally but hubby isn't keen at all 🙄. I hadn't considered Saffie sounding similar to Sophie.

Serafina or Seraphina could work too.

smoocakes6 · 06/04/2022 22:51

Sapphire. Saphie for short . Nice 😊

lms2017 · 06/04/2022 22:53

I have a friend called sapphire , she has only ever been called saffie , saffy x

Luredbyapomegranate · 07/04/2022 01:16

Not as a full name - Saffron or Safina

HellToTheNope · 07/04/2022 01:19

Absolutely not. Your daughter will be an adult for the vast majority of her life and Saffie is far too juvenile.

Kanaloa · 07/04/2022 01:24

I like Sapphire or Safiya. I looked after a Safiya and her dad always called her Saffy Taffy. Saffron is okay too. Saffie by itself isn’t that nice to me, especially when her big brother is the lovely Sebastian.

Maybe even Savannah with Savvie instead of Saffie?

ExMachinaDeus · 07/04/2022 02:25

Your child is only a “baby girl “ for a tiny proportion of her life. Give her a decent formal name, fgs.

KosherDill · 07/04/2022 02:27

I knew a poodle named Saffie.
