Currently discussing our baby girl names and we love Saffie just as a stand alone name. What's everyone's thoughts? We have a Sebastian who also gets nn seb. We both LOVE the name Saffie however my cousins daughter who is now 18 ( we only see very occasionally maybe once a year at a family gathering) is Saffron and get nn saff. I'm hoping it won't really matter as she doesn't get Saffie. Please tell me your thoughts??

It made me think of the poor little girl in the Manchester arena bombing too.

Agree Sophie or Savannah would be nice alternatives.

thesnaleandthewhail · 07/04/2022 02:34

It's a nickname, but sure go for something similar and shorten. If you really like saffron I'd just go for that and say to the family members that you just love her name and what good taste they have, and what a good name sake etc, rather than brushing it under the carpet and expecting no one to notice. That's the kind of thing (non communication I mean) that causes family gossip.

Choose either Sophia, Sophie, Saffiya, Saffron or Sapphire with Saffie as an nn.

Muppetlove · 07/04/2022 04:22

Surprised noone has mentioned it yet. Saffie is also short for South African. Don't do it.

plainjaneonthetrain · 07/04/2022 07:45

I thought of Staffie when I read the post.

Don't call her after a dog.

My god there’s some knobheads on here today. Why do people have to get so nasty over names? Op the first thing I thought of was the girl in Ab Fab, plus I’ve got two elderly clients with the name. I like it and I’ve never met an adult called Saffie and thought it was ‘juvenile’. It’s up to you if you want to use it as a nickname but it’s fine on its own.

TammyOne · 07/04/2022 09:21

Saffy IS a “ proper” name! Maybe not in rural Hampshire or whatever but in lots of places, it is. I like it, call your daughter what you like OP

Elysant · 07/04/2022 09:26

It also sounds very similar to selfie. I would pick Seraphina as full name for Saffie and I do like idea of Saffie as nickname, but prefer Seraphina as full name. Or Safina. But I wouldn't pick so similar name if your child has cousin Saffron who got called Saff even if you never seen them.

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/04/2022 09:28

Love it. Saffie is great but Saffiya if you want a long version

Ghostsofhumor · 07/04/2022 09:32

Personally it's too closely linked to staffie and I know too many dogs with the name

sunlovingcriminal · 07/04/2022 09:36

I think Savannah is gorgeous and that nn would work well with it. But yes to whoever said to give her a 'full name' that she can use more when she's an adult (if she chose to!)

magicstars · 07/04/2022 09:37

Saffy is sweet. I love Saffiya & saffron though as well.

It's fine to use family name & just explain it's a nod/ compliment to her cousin.
I get this may be more normal in some cultures than others & with more popular names.
Could you speak to your cousin & her daughter about it? They may be complimented.

Hasselhoffsheadband · 07/04/2022 09:37

@kitcat15

I find Saffie such a sad little name after the little girl who was the youngest to die in the Manchester arena bombing 😢
That's immediately who I think of when I hear the name as well Sad
TabithaTittlemouse · 07/04/2022 09:43

It would be strange with your son having a full (gorgeous) name plus nickname but not your dd.

I like Saffy as a nickname although it is also used as a full name. I like Sophia.

Notcreativeatall · 07/04/2022 09:47

My goddaughter is a Saffron but always gets called Saffy- She's an adult and i don't find the name particularly juvenile!
I'm in the give her a full name camp though (and I don't particular like the name -partly due to the AB fab reference )- p[refer Saffiya - but much prefer Sophia/Sophoe

MysticCT · 07/04/2022 09:49

I immediately thought of that little girl in the bombing too.

HomeHomeInTheRange · 07/04/2022 09:51

Saffie : good nickname or for a kid, too twee for an adult lawyer, say.

DogsAndGin · 07/04/2022 09:55

No it’s not a name

Dinoteeth · 07/04/2022 10:10

Makes me think of a girl puppy 🐶 staffy.
I also think she will always be correcting people who pick it up as Sophie.

caringcarer · 07/04/2022 10:30

My niece is Saffron but gets called Saffie. I would put Saffira/Saphira on birth certificates to give your child options as an adult. Saffie is sweet for a child but not as an adult and especially on job applications.

user1477391263 · 07/04/2022 11:18

It's a cute nickname for a little girl, but I don't think I'd want to have to write "Saffie" as my name as an adult. It's pretty juvenile sounding.

Babadook76 · 07/04/2022 12:21

@DogsAndGin

No it’s not a name
There are people named it, so it is a name 🙄
